College Place, Wash. – Walla Walla continued their homestand, hosting the Lions of Multnomah on Sunday afternoon. The Wolves (3-4, 1-1 CCC) and the Lions (0-7, 0-2 CCC) played in a defensive battle for the first 70 minutes of the match before the Wolves broke through the defense and recorded their first goal of the match. The Wolves continued displaying lock-down defense, registering their first shutout since joining the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) as a full member while adding another goal to win their first CCC match of the season, 2-0.
The first half was a defensive battle as the Wolves had their best opportunity to score late in the first half, but multiple team saves by the Lions kept the score at 0-0 going into the half.
Coming out of the half, both teams battled back-and-forth, as each team had opportunities to break the 0-0 tie, however, no team could find the back of the net. In the 72
nd minute, the Wolves finally broke through as Jordan St. George sent a cross ball over to the right side of the box and Pedro Reyes converted a beautiful header just beyond the outstretched arms of Lions goalkeeper Ivan Morales.
The Wolves wasted no time, as they turned a Lions turnover near midfield into their second goal two minutes later. Emmett Semple took a Gavin Cortes deflection off the post and found the back of the net to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead in the 73
rd minute. The Wolves continued to put the clamps down on defense for the remaining part of the match, prevailing with a 2-0 victory.
The Wolves continue their season on Friday, September 27 at 1:00 p.m. when they travel to Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash. The Lions will travel home for their conference home opener, hosting the Beacons of Northwest Christian University at 7 p.m. at the Eastside Timbers Soccer Complex.
