VANCOUVER – UBC senior Kate Johnston was spectacular on the opening day of her team's Gail Moore Intercollegiate women's golf tournament at the Sudden Valley Golf and Country Club in Bellingham, Wash.
The UBC-hosted event is the second Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) women's golf tournament of the season, and every program in the league is in the field, as are Victoria, Fraser Valley, and Skagit Valley (Wash.).
The reigning NAIA and Golf Canada champion UBC women – currently the top-ranked squad in the NAIA – finished Round 1 in first place with a combined score of 6-over par 294. Business student Johnston, of Ayr, Ont., topped the leaderboard with a stellar 4-under 68 performance. She recorded five birdies in the round, and is the only golfer under par in the 38-player field.
Oregon Tech sits in second with a collective 20-over 308, Fraser Valley is third after a 25-over 313 and Victoria is fourth with a 33-over 321 score.
Fraser Valley's Sarah Lawrence is second in the individual standings after carding a 1-over 73, while T-Bird Cecile Kwon is third following a 2-over 74 on Monday. Oregon Tech's Payton Canon joined Northwest Christian's Kelsie Hellwege and UBC's Esther Lee with a 3-over 75 as all three are currently tied for fourth.
The Gail Moore Intercollegiate will conclude Tuesday, with the final round beginning at 8:30 a.m. PT with a shotgun start.
