VANCOUVER – Kate Johnston and Cecile Kwon propelled the UBC Thunderbirds to victory at the Gail Moore Intercollegiate women's golf tournament, which concluded Tuesday at the Sudden Valley Golf Course in Bellingham, Wash.
Johnston closed with an even-par 72 in Round 2 to win the event by six strokes over her teammate, Kwon, who also carded a 72 Tuesday to finish at 2-over 146. Johnston's final score of 4-under was the only result under par, as she continues to build on an impressive career with her second tournament win.
As the host team, the defending NAIA champion Thunderbirds won the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) tournament with a collective 10-over 586 – an impressive 19 strokes ahead of Oregon Tech (605). Victoria (B.C.), a program from the Association of Independent Institutions, rounded out the top three with a total score of 53-over 629, Corban (Ore.) was fourth (85-over 661), and Northwest Christian (Ore.) finished fifth (111-over 687).
Fraser Valley's Sarah Lawrence and Oregon Tech's Ashley Zhu tied for third in the individual standings at 3-over 147, while Kelsie Hellwege of Northwest Christian was fifth with a 4-over 148.
Oregon Tech's Zhu and fellow Owl Aerin Song both shot a 1-under 71 on Day 2 as the low score for the round.
UBC's Shania Remandaban shot an even-par 72 to card a sixth-place 5-over 149 and Esther Lee finished with a combined score of 7-over 151 to tie for seventh, as four 'Birds earned a place in the individual top 10.
