Garcia’s Two Early First-Half Goals Spark Warrior Women’s Soccer to 4-0 Win
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Corban University women's soccer team picked up their second shutout in as many days in a 4-0 win over Multnomah University on Saturday, following up Friday's 3-0 shutout of Warner Pacific.
Chanel Garcia's two goals right out of the gate in the first 20 minutes proved to be more than enough for the Warriors to stay undefeated in conference play in 2019.
"It was another good weekend of growth for us where we improved from the first minute on Friday until the last minute on Saturday," said head coach Derek Faulkner. "We had to deal with different kinds of challenges this weekend, but we came together and got the job done on both days. We are continuing to grow and learn about each other and ourselves through every game and weekend. We are excited about the challenge we have ahead of us on the road for a couple of weeks and to keep pushing to get better."
The Warriors first two goals came in the 16th and 19th minutes from Garcia on a shot into the bottom left corner of the net and a header off of a corner kick that bounced around before being guided in by the head of Garcia. Eve Ponce added her first goal of the season to the game's running total in the 43rd minute to send the Navy and gold into the break with a 3-0 lead.
Coming out of the half, the Warriors were determined to add on to their already commanding lead. Just two minutes into the second half, Klarissa Barajas scored her third goal in her last two contests.
Corban shared the ball at an elite level in the match, as three out of the four goals that were scored were off of assists. Barajas, Kayla Sorrick, and Annouscka Kordom tallied dimes in the matchup.
The Warriors' 23 shots is a season high and 15 of those were on-goal. Meanwhile, Multnomah only registered two shots in the game, one of which was saved. Malie Kuia started the game for Corban and added to impressive collegiate resume with another win, pushing her to 6-0-1. Elizabeth Brock relieved Kuia today for the final 37 minutes after the lead had been stretched to four.
The Navy and Gold have improved their conference record to a highly impressive 3-0-1 in the first two weeks of CCC play. Next weekend will be two tough road CCC tests for the Warriors in Kirkland, Wash. to face Northwest University on October 4 and The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash. on October 5.
