UNDER ARMOUR TEAM OF THE WEEK ANNOUNCED
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Southern Oregon University men’s soccer team was named the Under Armour Team of the Week for Sept. 23-29, the Cascade Collegiate Conference announced Sunday.
After grabbing two CCC wins over the weekend, the Raiders improved to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference, extending their home CCC unbeaten streak to 15 games, dating back to 2017. Fourteen of those have been wins, and 13 have been shutouts.
SOU opened the week with a 2-1 victory over Carroll College on Friday and followed with a 2-0 win over Providence Sunday afternoon, its first shutout in five weeks.
Against the Saints, the Raiders scored two goals in the first half and held on for the win, despite a goal from Carroll in the 74th minute.
Adrian Villegas got things going in the 40th minute, running onto a through ball from Zak Woolley and tucking it into the back of the net. Four minutes later, Kelly Gieber dribbled through the Carroll defense and laid off a pass for Woolley to finish.
Two days later, SOU scored two goals again, but Wyatt Zabinski and his defense kept the clean sheet, limiting the Argos to just one shot on goal and six total.
The Raiders used a pretty sequence to get the first goal in the 59th minute. Michael Miller found Sam Walker down the right side, where he got to the end line and centered it to Renee Resendez for a point-blank strike.
With just seconds left in the game, Alan Gaytan put the final dagger in for the Raiders as he collected a loose ball and took off on a counter-attack breakaway, slipping it past the Argo goalkeeper to secure the 2-0 win for SOU.
The Raiders look to carry momentum with them into next week as they head to Walla Walla University and No. 24-ranked Rocky Mountain College.
