Selby's 14 saves, Waite's winner lead Raiders to upset of Sonoma
SOU Sports Information
TURLOCK, Calif. – Aislinn Waite rewarded Southern Oregon keeper Jessie Selby's 14-save effort by converting a penalty kick in the 84
th minute to give the Raiders their first win against NCAA Division II competition since 2012, 1-0 over Sonoma State (Calif.) on Saturday.
The matchup, played at Stanislaus State's Warrior Field, was decided after Waite was taken out on a slide tackle from behind. The goal was the second of her senior season, and she's recorded a point in four of SOU's five games.
Selby's save total was the highest in a single game for any Raider since 2006. The sophomore from Vancouver, Wash., helped the Raiders win on a day when they were out-shot a staggering 32-4 and put only one shot besides Waite's on goal. In her most recent start, she blanked 11
th-ranked Vanguard (Calif.) with seven saves.
The Raiders (3-2) were just minutes away from a perfect trip against elevated competition. But after losing a 3-1 lead to Sonoma State on Thursday, this one was even more impressive on paper.
The Seawolves (1-1) – an NCAA D2 Tournament team that finished No. 6 in the West regional rankings last year – were coming off a 3-2 win over 22nd-ranked Concordia (Ore.).
SOU will be off until its Cascade Conference opener on Sept. 21 at Oregon Tech.
