Talavera reaches quarterfinals to lead SOU on Day 1 of Missouri Valley Invite

MARSHALL, Mo. – JJ Talavera is into the 157-pounds semifinals and four others are still alive for the Southern Oregon University men's wrestling team after Friday's opening day of the Missouri Valley Invite.
Talavera, the 11th-ranked 157-pounder in the NAIA, knocked off all three of his opponents to remain in the championship bracket and improve to 18-6 on the season. After opening with a second-round pin off Lincoln (Ill.)'s Ke'Shawn Hess, he defeated back-to-back Cascade Conference opponents by decision: Montana State-Northern's Brent Evans, 12-6, and Providence (Mont.)'s Josh Johnson, 8-5.
In Saturday's quarterfinal round, he's slated to face off against 12th-ranked Ryan Delforge of Ottawa (Kan.).
Justin Coon (133), Matt Peterson (141), Layn Pannkuk (149) and Tanner Sallee (174) will all be in action in their respective consolation brackets.
Coon, Peterson and Sallee each pinned their first opponents, and Sallee followed up with a major decision before his first loss. Pannkuk earned an opening-round win by decision before his.
Beau Shatto went 2-2, winning twice in the 133 consolation bracket, before getting bounced.
The Raiders stand at 21st of 48 teams in the overall points race. Top-ranked Grand View (Iowa) has the lead.
