Southern Rallies for 61-54 Win at C of I
CALDWELL, Idaho – Southern Oregon used a strong fourth quarter to pull away late in a 61-54 win over The College of Idaho on Friday night in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
Kenadee French hit a 3-pointer with 51 seconds left in the third quarter and Hannah Maupin split a pair of free throws 37 seconds later to give the Yotes (8-13, 6-6 CCC) a 39-36 lead entering the fourth quarter
Trailing at the start of the final frame, the Raiders (13-6, 9-3 CCC) went on to outscore C of I by a 25-15 tally over the final 10 minutes, including a 5-0 run to end the game.
A 3-pointer by Sophia Jackson gave the Yotes what would end up being their final lead of the night at 44-41 with 7:28 remaining.
Kalei Iwami responded to the Jackson triple with one of her own on the next possession for SOU. The Raiders broke the 44-44 tie on their ensuing offensive opportunity when Daranda Hinkey hauled in a Syd'Nee Fryer missed 3-pointer and whipped it back out beyond the 3-point line to Dominique Harding, who would drain the key shot. SOU would hold the lead for the remaining 6:36 of the game.
There were plenty of bright spots in the loss for C of I, including an excellent shooting performance from Jackson, who shot 5-of-7 on 3-pointers to finish with a team-high 15 points.
Mackenzie Royce-Radford added 12 points, five assists, three blocks, two rebounds and a steal. The senior went 5-of-10 from the floor and 2-of-3 from outside. French scored nine points on a 3-of-7 effort from outside and Emily Harwood had six points, eight rebounds, three steals and a block.
As a team, the Yotes shot 10-of-27 (37 percent) on 3-pointers and 19-of-57 (33 percent) from the floor. Southern Oregon went 24-of-68 (35 percent) from the field and 6-of-19 (32 percent) from outside. The Raiders struggled at the free throw line, hitting at just a 7-of-18 (39 percent) clip.
Kami Walk had 16 points for SOU, including 12 of those points in the second half. Harding added 12 points for the night.
The Raiders won the rebounding battle 48-43 and forced the Yotes into 24 turnovers.
C of I finishes off the weekend by hosting Oregon Tech on Saturday night. The women's basketball team will be hosting Hoops for Scoops featuring four area elementary schools participating in a halftime competition to win an ice cream party with the Yotes, presented by Stella's Ice Cream.
