Softball 2/16/2020 5:28:00 PM Iain Dexter, EOU Sports Information Director Mounties Falter at Simpson Triangular REDDING, Calif. – The Eastern Oregon softball team dropped three games on Sunday to stiff competition, falling 12-4 to William Jessup in the morning game, followed by losses of 5-3 and 8-0 to Simpson at the Simpson Triangular. GAME 1 | William Jessup 12, Eastern Oregon 4 The Mountaineers had nine hits in game one, but gave up 16 to the Warriors. William Jessup scored five runs in the first two innings, but EOU answered with three of their own in the second and third to make it 5-3 through three innings. Neither team scored until the top of the fifth when the Warriors broke the game open with four runs, making it 9-3. They tacked on three in the top of the seventh to put the game away. EOU scored one in the bottom of the seventh but it was too little, too late. Junior Madison Parker went 2-for-4 in the game with two runs scored. Junior Glori Cheevers also had two hits with a run. Amanda Smith, Jordan Henley, Haley Ebner and Alaina Carson had the RBIs for EOU. GAME 2 | Simpson 5, Eastern Oregon 3 Down 5-0, the EOU offense did not wake up until the top of the seventh when they scored three runs. Payton Pocklington got the comeback attempt started with an RBI single with no outs. Later with two outs, freshman Brittney Bertrand brought home two runs to put the tying run at the plate. However, EOU was not able to get any closer as the final out was recorded on a ground out. Junior Amanda Smith made the start, allowing two earned runs (five total) in four innings of work. Abby Giles came in relief and pitched two scoreless innings to help keep EOU within striking distance. GAME 3 | Simpson 8, Eastern Oregon 0 (F/5) The Mountaineers were shutout in the final game of the day, limited to just three hits as the Redhawks won in five innings. Simpson finished the game on a walk-off single that scored two runs to enact the 8-run rule. Carson paced the offense with a 2-for-2 day. Ashton Kazmierski allowed eight runs with just four earned, as she was let down by three errors by the defense.
