Menlo College Leads CCC Wrestling Championships Following Day 1
ATHERTON, Calif. – Day one of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Wrestling Championships presented by U.S. Bank saw Menlo College earn a slim lead over defending Champion Embry-Riddle after the first 158 bouts of the 12-team tournament. Menlo and Embry-Riddle were bouncing back and forth all day long, but bonus points from a late pin at heavyweight helped propel the Oaks into the top spot as the day concluded.
10 of 12 #1 Seeds Remain in Tact
The 141 pound and 157-pound weight classes were the only two brackets to see the top-seeded wrestler fall on Day one. Vanguard's Gabriel Cortez pulled off the upset victory over Menlo's Eric Reyes in dramatic fashion. In a tie match, Cortez secured a takedown as time expired, however video review proved the clock was at 0:00 when the takedown occurred and it went to overtime. Cortez notched the win in SV-3 to stay on the top side. At 157, Casey Dobson of Providence lost a close 5-3 decision to Cooper McCullough of Corban.
Every other top-seeded wrestler picked up their pair of wins on Friday to set themselves up for a chance to advance to the finals Friday evening inside Haynes-Prim Pavilion.

Top-seeded Alexander Nunez went 2-0 as did #2 seed Riley Siason from Menlo College who earned a pair of major decision victories. Siason draws Nick Kunz of Montana State-Northern in the semifinals on Saturday while Nunez is set to face Embry-Riddle's Joshua Nira to try to punch is ticket to the finals.

Austin Wallace-Lister of Warner Pacific used a first round bye and a 10-7 decision victory over Monte Zufelt of Eastern Oregon to advance to the semifinals where he will take on Anthony Vargas of Life Pacific. On the bottom half, Blaysen Terukina used a tech fall and a 10-5 decision to cruise to the semis where he will tangle with Justin coon of Southern Oregon.

141 is shaping up to be one of the most interesting brackets of the weekend with the early upset of top-seeded Eric Reyes. Vanguard's Gabriel Cortez looks to ride the momentum of his sudden victory win as he takes on Simpson's Armand Molina in the semi's. The bottom half features #2 seed Blake McNall against Justin Acuff of Southern Oregon in the semifinals.

Another intriguing weight class that saw both its #1 and #2 seed survive day one. Shonn Roberts used a pair of pins to earn a matchup with Zachery Sias of Warner Pacific in the semis. In the bottom half, #2 seed Joseph Dominguez will face his teammate, Devin Everk, with a place in the finals on the line.

With the shakeup at the top, Corban's Cooper McCullough has a shot at the finals against Cole Drescher of upstart Arizona Christian. Drescher is trying to become the first ever member of the Firestorm to wrestle in the finals in the first year of the program.

#1 seed Alejandro Garcia of Menlo and #2 seed Jordan Komac of Providence each remained perfect. Komac had a first round bye then won a tight 6-5 decision over Noah Talavera of SOU. He draws Nakoda Siegel of Montana State-Northern in the semis while Garica draws Taylor Owens of the second-place ERAU Eagles.

A lot of bonus points were had by the top two seeds at this weight class with Daniel Butler of ERAU winnings by tech fall and major decision and #2 seed Levi Perry doing the same. Keegan Mulhill of EOU will face Perry after winning a major decision and an overtime bout while Gerardo Hernandez of Life Pacific used a bye and a decision victory to advance to the semis against Butler.

Defending National Champion Anthony Orozco officially went 2-0 with a tech fall and an injury default and he draws Hayden Schrull of Providence in the semis. In the bottom half, Taylor Hall of ERAU pinned both of his opponents and will face Bryce Decamargo of Simpson.

Another bracket with both of the top two seeds in tact is 197. #1 Isaac Bartel will face Jacob Gonzalves of Simpson in the semis while #2 John Hensley of Providence used a bye and a pin to advance to the semifinals against Ryan Redford of EOU.

Justin Harbison and Noel Orozco took care of business with the two combining for a pair of pins and a major decision. The #1 seeded Harbison is set to face Austin Roman of ACU while #2 Orozco faces Antonio Dacosta of Life Pacific.
Saturday's Schedule
Action gets under way tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. with session three and our championship semifinals followed by the consolation semifinals and consolation placement matches. Championship finals begin at 5 p.m. and will be streamed live on Trackwrestling.
