Menlo College Captures Second CCC Wrestling Championship

ATHERTON, Calif. – Host Menlo College captured its second Cascade Collegiate Conference Men's Wrestling Championship on Saturday evening in front of its home crowd. The Oaks claimed top honors at the 2020 CCC Championship, presented by U.S. Bank, thanks to six placers and a pair of champions. 

Last year's champion, Embry-Riddle, was close behind in second place, followed by Providence in third. The top-three placers in each weight class were announced as All-Conference. In total, 47 individual wrestlers punched their ticket this weekend to the 2020 NAIA National Championships in Park City, Kan. On March 6-7.

Most Outstanding Wrestler
Embry-Riddle's Daniel Butler claimed the title at a stake 174-pound weight class and earned CCC Most Outstanding Wrestler honors for his efforts. Butler, a Sophomore for the Eagles, entered the tournament as the top seed and used a tech fall, a major decision, a decision and a pin of #6 Levi Perry of Corban in the finals to punch his ticket to nationals and earn All-conference honors.

Coach of the Year
Joey Martinez of Menlo College was named Coach of the Year for the second time in the last three seasons. Martinez, in his 11th season as Menlo's Head Coach, led his team to a first place finish, 19 points better than second place Embry-Riddle.

Team Sportsmanship Award
For the first time, coaches voted for the team they felt best demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship during the tournament. Upstart Vanguard University claimed the honor for the 2020 championships.

Champions at a Glance
#1 seed Alexander Nunez captured his second consecutive CCC championship at 125 pounds, shutting out #2 seed Riley Siason of Menlo College 5-0. Nunez used three pins and a 5-0 decision to go 4-0 in an impressive weekend. Nick Kunz of Montana State-Northern finished in third, pinning Joshua Nira of Embry-Riddle in the third place match.

Blaysen Terukina had the gym rocking with his performance at 133 pounds as he managed to fend off a late attack from NAIA #1 Austin Wallace-Lister to claim the championship with a 3-1 victory. It was Terukina's second-consecutive CCC title. Anthony Vargas of Life Pacific defeated Justin Coon of Southern Oregon in sudden victory to place third.

At 141, Armand Molina of Simpson earned a title with a 3-1 victory in a back-and-forth affair with Justin Acuff of Southern Oregon. TJ Baun of Providence finished third, besting Eric Reyes of Menlo 5-4.

Shonn Roberts of Providence put together one of the most dominating finals performances of any weight class when he won a 14-4 major decision over Devin Everk of Menlo. Menlo placed two on the podium at the weight with Joseph Dominguez taking third with an 8-4 win.

An upset took place at 157 with Unranked Cooper McCullough of Corban taking down NAIA #7 Jeremy Talavera of Southern Oregon via pin. Arizona Christian's Cole Drescher took third to become the first wrestler in program history to qualify for nationals.

#2 seed Jordan Komac won his first CCC title with an 8-3 decision win over Taylor Owens of Embry-Riddle. #1 seed Alejandro Garcia of Menlo won third place via forfeit.

#1 seed and 2020 CCC Most Outstanding Wrestler Daniel Butler pinned Levi Perry in a high entertaining 174 final. The pin came 8:30 into a back-and-forth battle. Keegan Mulhill of Eastern Oregon placed third with an 11-8 win over Armon Fayyazi of Vanguard.

184 pounds was once again won by NAIA #1 Anthony Orozco of Menlo. Orozco won an 11-5 decision victory over Bryce Decarmago of Simpson to become a three-time CCC Champion. Marco Retano of EOU earned All-CCC status and third place, defeating Oliver Myers of ERAU 9-5.

Isaac Bartel won his second-straight CCC title, edging John Hensley of Providence 3-2 in the finals. Ryan Redford of EOU won a 5-4 decision over Jacob Gonzalves of Simpson to place third.

At 285 pounds, top-seeded Justin Harbison pinned Antonio Dacosta in 4:29 to win. EOU's Noel Orozco finished third, pinning Garrette Branson of ERUA in 5:28.
