LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. – A day after sealing the team's first win of 2020 through a thrilling walk-off double from Sam Woodley, the No. 24-ranked Corban University softball team saw itself on the short end of a pair of walk-off finishes on Saturday.
The Warriors dropped each of their matchups on day two of the TCS SoCal Classic, falling to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (8-7, eight innings) and No. 9 Vanguard University (5-4, eight innings).
Official stats from the contests were not provided.
"We showed up and competed in two well-fought games," said head coach Rachel Martin. "We put pressure on our opponents with many great at-bats, and defensively we had strong pitching performances today. We know what we need to continue to grow in, and once that happens, I can't wait to see the outcome!"
Corban led in each of the games, jumping out to a two-run lead in the first inning of game one against Embry-Riddle.
The Eagles would bounce back with a five-run third to flip the script, however, forcing the Navy and Gold to play catchup. Though the Warriors pulled within one with a pair of runs in the fifth, ERAU negated the rally with two of their own in the back half of the stanza.
Trailing by three entering the seventh, Corban was once again able to conjure late-inning magic, plating three runs to force extras. Ivey Uppinghouse brought the first of the three home with an RBI groundout, then Megan Rybar delivered a clutch two-run double to knot the score at seven.
Unfortunately for the Navy and Gold, the Eagles were able walk it off in the bottom of the eighth, with a single from Ramos bringing home the winning run—which began the inning by being placed at second base, per the tournament's international tiebreaker format.
Woodley (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 R), Makiah Johnson (3-for-5, 3 R) and Tatum Prechtel (2-for-5, R) each collected multiple hits in the defeat.
Similar to game one, the Warriors struck early in the afternoon matchup against No. 9 Vanguard. Corban plated four runs in the opening stanza, with Uppinghouse and Kaycee Arase each registering RBI singles in the frame.
That would be it for Corban's scoring, however, as the Lions scratched one back in the fourth and struck for three in the sixth to erase the early deficit.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, Angelina Lopez crossed home via an error in eighth, delivering yet another heartbreaking loss.
In the tough-luck loss, Johnson (2-for-4) and Prechtel (2-for-4, R) were once again exceptional at the top of Corban's order.
Corban (1-3) won't have to linger on the defeats long, finishing up the TCS Classic with matchups against No. 25 Marymount (10 a.m.) and Saint Katherine (12:30 p.m.) tomorrow.
