LEBANON, Ill. – Six Southern Oregon University women's wrestlers posted top-six finishes Saturday at the McKendree Bearcat Invitational, led by finalists Sienna Ramirez and Macie Stewart inside the Melvin Price Convention Center.
Ramirez advanced to the championship match at 143 pounds, where she is currently ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, and the 11th-ranked Stewart was the runner-up at 109 pounds.
Fifth-ranked Tara Othamn placed fifth at 116, fourth-ranked Gladdys Palma was fifth at 155, Glory Konecny took sixth at 123 and sixth-ranked Olivia Pizano added a sixth-place finish at 155.
Ramirez breezed through her first three matches and collected bonus points in each, winning by 10-0 technical fall over Nancy Becerra, by second-round pin against Simon Fraser's Sara Brinkac and by 10-0 technical fall over Missouri Valley's Brooke-Lynn Rush. She was pinned 1:17 into the championship by McKendree's Alara Boyd.
Stewart had the most dominant run of the day, needing just 3:05 combined to pin her first three opponents – McKendree's Valerie Carreon, Simon Fraser's Alexia Seal and McKendree's Natalie Reyna. Simon Fraser's Ciara McCrae took the 109 title, pinning Stewart in 1:16.
Palma and Pizano met in the 155 fifth-place match, where Palma took a 2-1 decision. Palma had reached the semifinals earlier with a technical fall and a decision, while Pizano rallied with a decision and three technical falls to stay alive after dropping her first match of the day.
Othman also lost her opening match before going 4-1 with two technical falls and a pin on her way to the fifth-place match, where she scored an 8-2 win over Lindenwood's Angelique Terrones-Cruz. Konecny got into the semifinals with a first-round pin over Missouri Valley's Gabrielle Grimes before being sent to the consolation bracket, where she earned back-to-back technical falls and lost her last two matches.
The fourth-ranked Raiders will return to action Feb. 17, when they'll work on their 7-1 dual record at second-ranked Menlo (Calif.).
