Mounties Sweep UBC in Doubleheader After Bertrand’s Walk-Off

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team swept the series opening doubleheader over the University of British Columbia, winning 12-9 and 6-5 on a walk-off in Cascade Collegiate Conference play on Friday afternoon at Peggy Anderson Field.

GAME 1 | Eastern Oregon 12, British Columbia 9

Game one featured a back-and-forth game with each team retaking the lead on three different occasions. The Mountaineers (5-12, 4-4 CCC) came through the biggest inning, however, scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth to turn a 7-7 tied into a 12-7 lead.

Mandy Fetters got the scoring started in the seventh as she came through with a pinch hit RBI single that scored junior Amanda Smith. Katie Silvestri came home on an error by the Thunderbirds (3-9, 2-3 CCC) to make it 9-7. The Mounties scored three more runs on a pair of UBC errors and a passed ball.

British Columbia's Cassa Courtney hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough as EOU took game one 12-7.

Freshman Brittney Bertrand went 3-for-4 with a run scored while Smith finished 3-for-3 also with a run and a double. Senior Jordan Henley was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and junior Madison Parker finished 1-for3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Taylor Down added two RBI and a run while Haley Ebner, Natalee Hall and Fetters each drove in runs.

The Thunderbirds started the game with two runs in the first on a two-run single by Hanna Hansen. The Mounties answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half as Alaina Carson scored on an error and Ebner brought home Bertrand on a sacrifice fly.

UBC reclaimed the lead in the third, but once again EOU answered as Dow hit a two-run double to center field and later scored on an error to make it 5-3. The Thunderbirds scored two in the fourth with the Mounties getting a run in the bottom half on a bases-loaded hit by pitch by Hall to make it 6-5. UBC took the lead with two runs in the fifth but EOU was once again able to answer with a sacrifice fly by Henley to score Parker.

Smith made the start, pitching 4.2 innings with seven runs allowed. She returned to the game in the seventh to record the final three outs. Hall pitched 1.1 innings and senior Ashton Kazmierski earned the win in relief with one shutout inning.

GAME 2 | Eastern Oregon 6, British Columbia 5

A walk-off single by Bertrand in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Mountaineers to the doubleheader sweep in game two. With runners on first and second, Bertrand hit a hard line drive to the shortstop that found its way through the hole and into left field, allowing Silvestri to score from second to complete EOU's comeback. Silvestri led off the inning with a walk, moving over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Glori Cheevers. Carson kept the inning going later with a walk.

UBC opened the game with a 2-0 lead as they scored two runs in the top of the second inning. The Mountaineers were held scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Shelby Starr bunted for a sacrifice, but a Thunderbird error allowed her to reach and brought home Julie Hernandez and Smith to tie the score at 2-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, EOU took its first lead of the game as Silvestri drove in two more runs with an RBI single to center field to go ahead 4-2.

Courtney then answered for UBC with her second home run of the day, another two-run shot that tied the game at 4-4. The Thunderbirds took the lead 5-4 as Nicole Salas hit an RBI single. The Mounties tied the score in the bottom of the sixth as Smith brought home Carson with her own RBI single, setting up the eventual walk-off opportunity in the seventh.

Bertrand went 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI. Smith was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Silvestri was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Kazmierski made the start, allowing two runs with one earned in three innings. Kaylin Winans earned the win in relief, pitching 1.2 shutout innings.

The Mountaineers finish the series on Saturday, already winning the Cascade Conference portion. Games are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Peggy Anderson Field.
