CORVALLIS, Ore. –
The following 11 CCC student-athletes have been recognized as the WVT Laboratory Players of the Week for their performances during the period Oct. 11-17, 2021.
Women’s Volleyball - Attacker
Bushnell University’s Shay Coons was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Volleyball Attacker of the Week.
Coons, a junior outside hitter from Salem, Ore., was the offensive leader (15 kills, .342 attack percentage) as Bushnell defeated No. 6-ranked Corban University in three sets for its first-ever win over an NAIA Top-10 program and handing the Warriors their first loss of the year. She added another 15 kills, hitting .351, in the sweep of Multnomah University. Coons finished the week averaging 3.80 kills per set on a .330 clip.
Women’s Volleyball - Defender
Bushnell University’s Callie Wilkins was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Volleyball Defender of the Week.
Wilkins, a senior defensive specialist from Happy Valley, Ore., helped the Beacons post a 3-0 week, including a three-set win over previously undefeated No. 6-ranked Corban University. In the sweep over the Warriors, she collected 14 digs. She then posted 17 digs and six aces against Warner Pacific University and added 21 digs against Multnomah University, averaging 5.20 digs per set on the week.
Women’s Volleyball - Setter
Bushnell University’s Makenna Northern was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Volleyball Setter of the Week, her third honor of the year.
Northern, a junior setter from Brownsville, Ore., fueled the Beacon offense to three wins on the week. She averaged 13.00 assists and 2.50 digs per set. Her 50 assists against Warner Pacific University was a school record for a four-set match and came along with 16 digs.
Women’s Soccer – Defensive Player
Oregon Tech’s Alyx Burkhartzmeyer was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this year.
Burkhartzmeyer, a sophomore goalkeeper from West Linn, Ore., played all 180 minutes in goal for the Owls – who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA coaches’ poll – grabbing two wins on the week. She had three saves against No. 18-ranked Eastern Oregon University to post a clean sheet and made four saves in a 3-1 win over College of Idaho, also receiving votes.
Women’s Soccer – Offensive Player
Oregon Tech’s Kiah Wetzell was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
Wetzell, a freshman forward from Clackamas, Ore., helped the Owls, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA coaches’ poll, go 2-0 over an important weekend. She had the game-winning assist and the insurance goal in Friday's 2-0 win at No. 18-ranked Eastern Oregon University and then had the game-tying goal against the College of Idaho (RV) on Saturday.
Men’s Soccer – Defensive Player
Southern Oregon University’s Moises Hernandez was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
Hernandez, a sophomore defender from San Luis Obispo, Calif., played all 180 minutes on the backline as SOU turned in back-to-back clean sheets and only allowed four shots on goal over the weekend. He also assisted the game-winning goal against Eastern Oregon University (1-0) and scored the insurance goal against College of Idaho (2-0).
Men’s Soccer – Offensive Player
Warner Pacific University’s Arturo Bahena was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this year.
Bahena, a senior forward from Las Vegas, had two goals and four assists to help the Knights grab a 3-0 week. He scored and had three assists to lift WPU 4-1 over NCAA Division II Saint Martin’s University in non-conference action, before scoring a goal and adding another assist in a 3-1 win at Northwest University.
Women’s Cross Country – Runner
No. 10-ranked Southern Oregon University’s Kayla Clayton was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week for the second time this year.
Clayton, a junior from Salinas, Calif., led all NAIA runners and placed 12
th overall at the Lewis & Clark Invitational. She finished the 6K with a time of 21:59.2 to help the Raiders take seventh out of 23 teams.
Men’s Cross Country – Runner
No. 14-ranked Lewis-Clark State College’s Cole Olsen was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week.
Olsen, a senior from Clearwater, Idaho, was the top NAIA finisher at the Inland Empire Championships, taking fifth out of 149 runners. He crossed the 8K finish line in 24:31.
Women’s Golf – Golfer
Oregon Tech’s Maiya Baker was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Golfer of the Week.
Baker, a junior from Las Vegas, took first at the Coastal Collegiate Classic. She posted a three-round score of 228 (78-75-75) to lead the Owls to a first-place team finish.
Men’s Golf – Golfer
Multnomah University’s Jacob Larson was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Golfer of the Week.
Larson, a senior from Vancouver, Wash., took first out of 24 golfers at the Coastal Collegiate Classic. He posted a three-round score of 221 (71-75-75), helping the Lions take second as a team.
