ROCKLIN, Calif. – The Southern Oregon University cross country teams looked postseason-ready Saturday in the Warrior Invitational, where the 16th-ranked Raider men captured the team title and the 10th-ranked Raider women were third of 10 teams on the campus of William Jessup University.
The team victory was the second of the season for SOU's men, who had four placers among the top-11 among a 108-person field. Isaac Fernandez was the runner-up on the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes 23.5 seconds – finishing 16 seconds back of the individual champ, Oregon Tech's Mark French – and third-place Kevin VanDyke was in less than three seconds later at 24:26.1.
Alex Harbert-Castro ran strong in seventh place (24:58.4), Zeke Stelzer was 11th (25:08.6) and Lincoln Woodhouse placed 25th (25:41.7). Asher Tatsumi (26:18.9, 42nd) and Jensen Salvatori (26:47.6, 55th) were the next Raiders in.
They totaled 46 points as a team to beat out both No. 12-ranked College of Idaho in second place (55 points) and No. 9 Oregon Tech in third (57). They'll see both teams again at the Cascade Conference Championships in Nov. 5 in Klamath Falls.
With 77 points, the Raider women finished behind No. 9 College of Idaho (38) and No. 22 Westmont (Calif.) (55).
Sydnee Kizziar turned in a top-10 finish on the 5K course, placing seventh in 18:01.0 to pace the Raiders for the first time this season. Kayla Clayton was 11th in 18:19.3.
Their next three placers finished within 40 seconds of each other: 14th-place Haylee Brodahl (18:38.0), 18th-place Alejandra Lopez (18:41.5), and 28th-place Maya Smith (19:10.5). Claire Tillett was 57th (20:21.9) and Gracie Freudenthal 63rd (20:53.7) in the 88-person field.
