ROCKLIN, Calif. - Mountaineer Women's Basketball dropped its first game of the 2021-22 season Monday evening as the team fell 61-48 on the road to William Jessup University. The loss drops Eastern Oregon's record to 2-1 to start the year.
How it Happened
• Turnovers plagued the Mountaineers in the loss as they had 30 on the night, while the Warriors (1-0) had just nine.
• William Jessup only shot 32.9% in the game but put up 76 shots and nailed 25. They also scored 21 points off EOU's 30 turnovers, which made the ultimate difference.
• EOU won the rebounding battle at 51-39, but gave up 16 steals to the Warriors. Offensively, EOU was 37% from the floor on 17-46 shooting.
• Neither team shot the ball well from three-point range as EOU was just 4-16 (25%), while William Jessup finished 5-23 (21.7%).
• At the free throw line EOU put up 23 shots but made just 10 for 43.5% shooting percentage. The Warriors took just eight free throws but connected on six to finish at 75%.
• The first quarter got off to a great start for the warriors as guard Monica Valenzuela scored 11 straight points to put them in front 11-2.
• Despite the struggle out the gate, EOU battled back and trailed by just one point after the first, 15-14.
Maddy Juul sparked the offense with seven points, while
Adyson Harris added five.
• Helping EOU get back into the game was efficient shooting and rebounding. EOU won the battle on the glass in the first at 13-8 and shot 50%, compared to just 29.2% by William Jessup.
• Both teams kept the pace up in the second quarter. EOU put up 14 points once again, while William Jesusp added 18 to take a 33-27 lead into the break.
• The Mounties grab their first lead of the contest in the first 60 seconds on a layup from Juul to put them ahead 16-15. The two teams then traded points and the lead the rest of the frame.
• In the final 3:30 of play, the Warriors managed to create some separation to go into the break with the five-point lead. EOU's last lead was at 24-23 before the Warriors went back ahead.
• A pair of late three pointers off EOU turnovers made the difference to give William Jessup the 33-28 lead, despite shooting just 27.3% in the frame.
• Outside of being down by five, EOU was leading the way in nearly every statistical category. They won the rebounding battle, 29-21, and shot 43.5% in the first half.
• 16 first half turnovers by EOU to just one by William Jessup was the difference in the six-point game. The Warriors scored eight points off the 16 Mountaineer turnovers.
• After a pair of double-digit quarters in the first half, EOU and William Jessup combined for just 19 points in the third. EOU had the edge at 10-9, but trailed by five, 42-37.
• The Warriors managed to grab their first double figure lead of the game at the 5:37 mark of the third, 40-30, and led by a smooch as 11in the quarter when they got 42-31.
• Getting the Mountaineers within five going into the fourth was a triple by
Sydney Zeiler in the final 30 seconds of play. Her three pointer put her at nine points to match Juul for the team lead.
• The fourth quarter went in the Warriors favor as they outscored EOU 19-11 to secure the 13-point win.
• A layup by Juul to start the quarter got Eastern within three, 42-39, of William Jessup before a 6-0 run by the home team opened the score up to 48-39.
• The Mountaineers managed to get within six, 48-42, when
Brandy Smith nailed a layup and drew contact for the and-one opportunity.
• The Warriors scored on the next possession to stay in front by eight, 50-42, with 6:24 left to play in the game. Both teams went cold over the next three minutes to keep things interesting.
• Eastern never managed to close the gap as missed shots and late turnovers helped the Warriors lead by as much as 15 points before walking away with their season opening win.

Haley Robinett posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Maddy Juul was the only other double figure scorer with a team best 11 points on 5-8 shooting.

For the Warriors
• Monica Valezuela finished with 19 points on 8-16 shooting to lead the Warriors and was the top rebounder with eight boards.
• Makaila Glynn added 11 points in the win on 5-11 made shots and grabbed four rebounds.
• Natalie Moulos scored 10 points off the bench and shot 50% (4-8) in the win.
• Bobbie Purify led the defense with four steals on the night and chipped in four points.

30 - The Mountaineers 30 turnovers is the most in a game since November 21, 2015 when they also had 30 against Xavier University.
