Oaks spoil SOU's home opener

ASHLAND – Menlo (Calif.) had its way with the Southern Oregon men's wrestling team on Thursday night, taking a Cascade Conference dual 30-9 at Riehm Arena.

Justin Coon and Noah Talavera were SOU's lone winners. Coon, the Raiders' No. 16-ranked 141-pounder, tied up Logan Avina-Barajas in the third period and scored a takedown a minute into overtime for a 3-1 sudden victory. Talavera wore down Jordan Bernal at 174 and pinned him with 25 seconds left in the second period.

The Oaks scored bonus points in the first two matches of the night, as Gregory Viloria (125) and Jacob Mendoza (133) won by major decision over 13th-ranked Pancho Barrera and Evan Potter. Elijah Palacio added another major over 16th-ranked JJ Talavera at 149, and Rysan Leong (165) registered the Oaks' only pin in the third round against Max Miller.

Menlo's Abraham Del Torro won a neck-and-neck battle against Aaron Gandara at 157, recording a late takedown that flipped the lead and adding a riding-time point for a 12-10 win. It made the team score 15-3.

Afton Silvis (184), Hunter James (197) and Amrit Singh (285) tacked on three consecutive decisions to end the night for the Oaks.

The Raiders fell to 1-1. They'll be back in action Sunday at Pacific's Mike Clock Open.
