Fast Start Propels Mountaineers to 15-Point Win Over Red Hawks

CALDWELL, Idaho - Eastern Oregon Women's Basketball picked up its second consecutive win Friday afternoon with a 15-point victory over the Simpson Red Hawks on day one of the Best Western Caldwell Inn and Suites Classic. With the win, the Mountaineers push their record to .500 at an even 4-4.

How it Happened
• Defense was the theme in the game as neither squad allowed the other to shoot over 40%. EOU's defense was the stronger aggressor holding Simpson (1-8) to just 29.8% for the game.
• The Mountaineers shot just over 38% at 38.6 but playing a big role in the win was points in the paint. They had 34 and limited the Red Hawks to just 16.
• When it came to cleaning up the board, the Mountaineers once again dominated. They had 47 total and 14 on offense leading to 14 second chance points. On the flip side, Simpson mustered just 22 boards in the loss.
• The opening quarter was all EOU en route to the double-digit win as they outscored Simpson 17-7 to lead by 10. Through the first five minute sof action EOU led 8-5 before blowing open the lead.
• EOU pushed its lead to 10-5 before a shot by the Red Hawks cut the score to 10-7 with 3:13 left in the frame. EOU then closed out the quarter with a 7-0 run to maintain control, 17-7, going into the second.
• The Mountaineers 7-0 run to close out the first quarter grew to a 15-0 run to start the second. The extra eight points by the Mountaineers was methodical in its pace as they used that run to lead 25-7 with 2:42 to play in the half.
• It was the defense of the Mountaineers that stifled the Red Hawks who scored just three points in the second quarter. Eastern scored just eight points, but their defense did enough to give them a 25-10 lead at the break.
• In the second half, the Red Hawks managed to find a better rhythm on offense and scored 32 points, but the Mountaineers managed their pace with the same amount of points to hold the lead.
• Both quarters were high scoring affairs. In the third, the Red Hawks just outscored the Mountaineers 14-12, but it was the fast start for Eastern that helped them stay in front by double digits the entire third quarter.
• The Red Hawks managed to make it an 11-point game a pair of times late in the third, but each time EOU answered. Made shots from Maddy Juul and Ami Tia in the final two minutes kept the Mountaineers in front by 13 going into the fourth.
• Simpson made a comeback effort in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run. The surge cut EOU's lead to just five, 37-32.
• Despite the Red Hawks best efforts, the Mountaineers answered with another strong offensive surge to put the game away for good.
• A made triple by the Red Hawks got them within six, 41-35, midway through the frame. That was the closest they got again before EOU ran away with the win.
• A jumper by Juul with under 5:27 to play ultimately sparked a 16-2 run by the Mountaineers that lasted just over three minutes. Simpson mustered just five more points after the run while EOU added five as well  to secure the 57-42 win.
