TACOMA, Wash. – The Evergreen State College men's basketball team fell in the season opener to University of Puget Sound 93-72 Sunday evening in Memorial Fieldhouse.
Evergreen was led by Austin Curry, who had 23 points and LaBrandon Price added 14 points. Mitch Wetmore came off the bench to record 12 points. Curry led on the rebounds with 10 for a double-double.
Puget Sound was led by Paul Johnson, who had 25 points, Grant Erickson added 19 points and Cal Hansen had a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
The Geoducks shot 37.7 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line. The Loggers shot 57.4 percent from the field and had 31 turnovers for the game. Evergreen recorded 20 points off those turnovers.
The Loggers opened the game with a 9-0 run that was ended when Lane Kenney hit a three. Evergreen was able to come back and take the first lead of the game after Jameel Morton hit a shot with 12:18 left in the first half. That was the first of eight lead changes. After trading points back and forth, Puget Sound took the lead for the last time and Evergreen just couldn't get it back.
Evergreen is 3-9 overall against the Loggers and Puget Sound has won the last seven contests.
The Geoducks are back in action Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. to face Pacific Lutheran in Tacoma, Wash.
