CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Montana State University Northern men’s wrestling team has been named the Under Armour Team of the Week for Dec. 13-19 the Cascade Collegiate Conference announced Sunday.
The No. 10 ranked Lights topped conference foe Eastern Oregon University in a dual match 27-18 prior to competing in the Reno Tournament of Champions.
Against the Mountaineers MSUN won 5 of 10 matches and were led by All-Americans Nick Kunz (125) and Isaac Bartel (197). Kunz was awarded a technical fall win taking his match 20-4, while defending national champion Bartel secured his victory with a pin.
The Lights carried the momentum into the prestigious Reno Tournament of Champions placing 13
th overall. The tournament included NCAA Div. I, II teams, as well as several of the top teams in the NAIA. MSUN scored 47.5 points. The tournament was won by Oregon State University followed by the University of Wyoming. Bartel again shined bright for the Lights earning a runner-up finish dropping the championship bout to Stephan Buchanan of Wyoming at 197.
MSUN will be off for the holiday break before returning to action against Dickinson State University on Jan. 12 followed by hosting NCAA power Iowa State University on Jan. 16 in Belgrade, Montana.
