LINCOLN, Calif. – For the second-consecutive weekend, the Corban University baseball team traveled down to California to compete against a challenging Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) foe. This time facing off against William Jessup University, the Navy and Gold fell in both of Friday's contests, dropping the games by scores of 12-4 and 10-4.
"We continue to allow other teams to do whatever they want offensively and on the mound against us," said head coach Derek Legg. "We have shown zero ability to control momentum, and until we do, the results will be similar."
Both game-one starters—Corban's Drew Scherrer and William Jessup's Danny Chavez—looked sharp in the early going, as the first baserunner for either side didn't come until Dakota Fingar reached via a walk in the third inning.
In the bottom half of the frame, the powerful Jessup offense caught a spark, plating a pair of runs on an RBI double from Kevin Gutierrez and a sac fly from Kawaiola Takemura.
Maxwell Jeffrey helped get one of those runs back in the top of the fourth, when he ended a long, gritty at-bat with an RBI single to left, scoring Sede.
The Jessup offense was just getting started, however, as the hometown squad would go on to put up two-spots in the fourth and fifth innings, before exploding for six runs in the sixth.
Mike Shoenberger (2-4, 2 R, RBI), Dante Peretti (3-4, 2 R, RBI), Jaisten Cabatbat (3-4, R, RBI), Jordan Yu (4-4, 2 R, 2 RBI), and Max Modeste (1-2, HR, 2 RBI) were at the center of the offensive action for Jessup.
The Navy and Gold offense showed some life in the eighth, when Fingar blasted his first homer of 2021—a solo shot over the left-field fence. Just a few batters later, Reese Fawley tallied his first long ball as a member of the Warriors, scoring Bradley Thomas with a two-run blast to dead center.
It wouldn't be enough to overcome the daunting deficit, however, as Jessup claimed the series opener by a 12-4 final tally.
In game two, Peretti picked up right where he left off, blasting a three-run homer off Nate Martin in the bottom of the first to give Jessup an early advantage.
Corban responded by scoring two in the following half inning—pulling within one with a pair of runs in the top of the second—but Jessup got both of those right back in the bottom half of the frame.
It looked as if the Navy and Gold had another comeback brewing in the top of the fifth, when Sede blasted a clutch two-run homerun down the right-field line to once again narrow the deficit to one.
The momentum quickly shifted back into the hands of Jessup, however, as homers from Kevin Jordan and Modeste ignited a five-run rally in the home half of the fifth stanza. With a 10-4 lead in hand after the pivotal half inning, Jessup would cruise to the day-one doubleheader sweep.
The pitching woes continue for the Navy and Gold, who have now surrendered double-digit runs in four of the squad's six games.
The Warrior lineup is also yet to find its groove, as Kyle Clay's three-hit game in the season opener against No. 18 Vanguard currently stands as Corban's only multi-hit performance of the young season.
Corban (0-6) will have another shot at Jessup tomorrow, concluding the four-game series with games at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
