Mountaineers Fall to Corban in Home Opener

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon University Men’s Soccer hit the pitch for the first time in 2021 as the Mountaineers hosted Corban University in a non-conference bout inside Community Stadium. The Warriors spoiled the EOU home opener with 4-0 shutout win to drop the Mountaineers to 0-1.
The Warriors (1-0) held the overall shot advantage by two, 8-6, and had a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks also fell in favor of Corban at 2-1 and had one more corner kick, 5-4.
Only three saves were tallied for the game, with Corban leading the way at 2-1. The Mountaineers also were called for more fouls at 14-12.
Corban managed to score three of its four goals in the first frame to help grab and maintain control of the game. The first came when Nate Sherwood scored in the 12th minute.
The lead for the Warriors grew to 2-0 three minutes later when Matheus Giron scored on the assist from Jose Peralta. The third goal of the first period came in the 17th minute thanks in part to kick shot down the middle of the net by Noe Favila and extended Corban’s lead to 3-0. The Warriors took that lead into halftime.
The fourth and final goal for the Warriors came in the 69th minute as Giron found Eric Bengana in stride to give Corban its final lead of 4-0.
For EOU, Jorge Medina had one shot for the game, with it coming on goal. He was one of six Mounties to have a shot in the game. Rudy Salinas-Solorio also had one shot that came on goal. In net, Max Rose (0-1) finished with one save in 90 minutes of action.
Matheus Giron led Corban as he had a goal and an assist. He took two shots with one coming on goal. Noe Favila also had a goal in two shots. Both his shots came on goal. Nate Sherwood and Eric Bengana each scored a goal in the win. Goalkeeper Justin Keegan played all 90 minutes and tallied two saves to improve to 1-0.
The Mountaineers are back in action this Sunday, Feb. 28 as they will host Northwest University (Wash.) in makeup from the postponed game that was originally set for Sunday, Feb. 21. This Sunday’s game is set for a 1:30 p.m. PT kickoff.
