GREAT FALLS, Mont. – In their first game of the 2021 spring season, the University of Providence men's soccer team defeated Multnomah 4-1 Sunday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, George Almeida scored the first goal of the Argo season off the assist from Kevin Vasquez-Hernandez in the 50th minute. Three minutes later, Vasquez-Hernandez scored a goal of his own after a beautiful assist from Manu Garcia

Aaron Morales scored for the Lions (0-4, 0-1) off the ball from Jacob Moctezuma-Ibarra four minutes later to cut the lead to one, but Almeida scored against in the 59th minute off the assist from Kolby Hayes to push the lead back to two. Garcia scored the final goal of the day in the 65th minute off a penalty kick.

"We started a little slow," interim head coach Danny Burstein said. "The first half was still good for us. We controlled the ball. We held possession for a huge percentage. We just couldn't break them down in the final third. We had a few good chances."

"We turned it up a little bit," he continued. "We came out fighting. We changed the pace a little bit and were able to create opportunities to get in behind and we got some goals off of that."

The Argos (1-0, 1-0) dominated the Lions in possession and shots, taking 21 shots compared to the Lions one. However the coaching staff expects a lot of adjustments from the Lions when the two teams face off again at 3 p.m.

"Yes we've seen more of them but obviously they've seen some more of us," Burstein said. "They now know what we want to do and they can try to stop us from playing our game. We're going to have to be on it right from the start and get after it a little bit sooner."
