Eagles, Carroll Split
BELLEVUE – Northwest continued to pile up runs in a doubleheader split with Carroll Sunday, losing the first game 13-8 before taking the second game 9-8.
"We're getting better every game," said NU Head Coach Pam Fink. "Our hitters are starting to get comfortable in the box. We have a lot of season left."
Northwest was undone by 13 walks and five wild pitches in the first game as the Eagle pitchers struggled with the wet conditions.
Carroll took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, including a three-run double by Anna Davidson.
The Eagles got three runs back in the home half of the inning. Sammi Caron doubled and scored on a base hit by Nicola Fish. Two more runs scored on an error.
Carroll scored three times in the fourth and tacked on six more in the fifth to take a 13-3 with Davidson ripping another three-run double.
The Eagles kept the game going with three runs in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back home runs by Alyssa Maldonado and Kayla Stanley. Maldonado's was a two-run home run after Jessica Nunes had singled.
Nicola Fish added a solo home run in the sixth and Maldonado added her second home run of the game in the seventh.
Northwest had nine hits, including two each by Caron, Fish, and Maldonado.
Davidson and Sarah Jenkins had three hits apiece for the Saints with Davidson driving in seven runs.
In the second game, NU jumped out for four runs in the second inning. After Starlynn Ripley scored on an error, Ashley Oswald's squeeze bunt attempt turned into an RBI single when the CC third baseman lost her footing on the wet turf. Caron added a two-run single for the 4-0 lead.
Carroll came back with three runs in the third, including a two-run double by Amber Brewer, but the Eagles got all three runs back in the home half of the inning. Sydney Maurer had an RBI single ahead of back-to-back BRI doubles by Sam Parisio and Ashley Oswald.
Caron tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth. Maldonado doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Parisio in the fifth for a 9-3 lead.
Jenkins and Jessica Nimmo had RBI singles in a three-run sixth for the Saints.
Emma Hamilton singled in two more runs in the seventh with one out, but Maurer came on in relief and got the final two outs for her first career save.
Becca Rennick got the win.
Northwest had another nine hits in the second game, getting two and two RBI each by Caron, Parisio, and Oswald.
Hamilton had two hits to lead the CC nine-hit attack.
Northwest returns to action Saturday and Sunday at Bellevue High School, taking on Warner Pacific.
