Mountaineers Defeat Argos for First Conference Win

LA GRANDE, Ore. - Eastern Oregon University Men’s Soccer picked up its first Cascade Collegiate Conference East Division win on Monday with a 2-1 victory over the University of Providence (3-1, 3-1). With the win, the Mounties improve to 2-7-0 overall and 1-5-0 in conference play.

Alexander Zuluaga set the tone for the Mountaineers in the 33rd minute with a great touch and score on the assist by Connor Heal to give the Mounties an early advantage.

The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime as both teams played a strong half of defense. EOU was held to three shots in the period while the Argos only had two.

The Mountaineers were on the board once again in the 53rd minute when Senior Patrick Larsen picked up his fifth goal of the season on an assist by Jodanni Osuna.

With the Mounties leading 2-0, Providence was able to get on the board in the 65th minute to cut the EOU lead in half. However, the Mountaineers limited the Argos to zero shots the rest of the way to secure the 2-1 win inside Community Stadium.

For the game, the Mountaineers outshot Providence 9-7 and 5-2 shots on goal. Both teams committed 11 fouls in the contest.
 
Alexander Zuluaga led the offensive attack for the Mountaineers with two shots on goal and a goal in the win. Patrick Larsen added a goal of his own on his only shot attempt. Alvin King III had two shots and one on goal for the Mounties. Connor Heal and Jodanni Asuna each had an assist in the win over the Argos. In net, Max Rose picked up a save in 90 minutes for the Mounties.
 
Joel Samaoya picked up the Argos’ lone goal of the day. George Almeida had one assist and one shot for the Argos. Kevin Vasquez-Hernandez had one shot which came on goal in the loss.
 
The Mountaineers will be back inside Community Stadium on April 4th and 5th to finish up Cascade Collegiate Conference play in a two-game series over the Multnomah Lions. Games times are set for 1:30 p.m. PT.
