SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University women's soccer team began their final home weekend of the regular season on a windy day on the pitch against the Warner Pacific University Knights at the CFC Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. A strong offensive performance from the Warriors led to an impressive 3-1 triumph on the home turf.
"It was great to get another win today," said interim head coach Tim Kagey. "We look forward to getting after it again tomorrow."
The game began with the Warriors having several chances on goal but not converting them, until Jamine Biava capitalized on a worm-burning laser into the bottom-right corner of the net in the 28th minute. Juliana Pires was credited with the assist after receiving the touch pass from Biava on the corner kick.
Corban entered the half with a 1-0 lead, as the Knights struggled to create offensive chances. The Navy and Gold outshot WPU 13-2 in just the first half of the game.
In the second half, Corban accounted for the first two strikes tallied, as Maria-Frances Serrant (52nd minute) and Makali Nance (72nd minute) racked up a goal each.
Pires earned an assist on the goal from Serrant, giving her a total of two distributions on the afternoon.
Warner Pacific fought back late in the half, as they drew a hand ball in the box which allowed a penalty kick goal to be scored by Courtney Cutter, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Warriors in the 79th minute.
Corban would hold that lead until the end, as they coasted to their sixth victory of the campaign.
The Warriors ended up with an advantage of 21-9 on shots, while they also held the lead in shots on goal with eight. Warner Pacific had just four shots on goal in the bout.
Devan Archer was not tested much in goal, but added to her impressive season record (6-2) with her sixth triumph of the year.
The Navy and Gold (6-2, 6-1 CCC) have just one more home game remaining this year, as it will be Monday against the same Knights squad. Corban is in search of a Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) West Division title and is tied with the Oregon Tech Owls, who split with the Warriors earlier this season. After tomorrow's contest, the Navy and Gold will travel to Ashland, Ore. to face off with Southern Oregon University in the squad's final regular-season contests of the campaign.
