CORVALLIS, Ore. –
The following 12 CCC student-athletes have been recognized as the Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Players of the Week for their performances during the period April 12-18, 2021.
Women’s Basketball - Player
Bushnell University’s Kaylen Kamelamela was named the Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Kamelamela, a five-foot-eight sophomore guard from Kapolei, Hawaii, led Bushnell to its ninth- and 10
th-straight wins and back-to-back CCC championships with the weekend sweep of Eastern Oregon University. She scored 26 points on Friday, which was a career-high. In that game, she scored 14 points in the fourth quarter, including 12 of the final 14 points as Bushnell held on to win. On Saturday she scored 11 points in the first half as the Beacons jumped out to a 48-24 lead and had three steals during the 34-11 second quarter. Kamelamela finished with 19.5 points and 6.0 steals per game with a 66.7 field-goal percentage, including 85.7-percent from three-point range.
Men’s Basketball - Player
Southern Oregon University’s Tez Allen was named the Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Allen, a six-foot-five junior guard from Carson City, Nev., had a solid weekend for SOU. He flirted with a triple-double (21 points, nine rebounds, seven assists) and hit the go-ahead trey with a minute and 20 seconds left in Saturday's win over Corban University. The next day, Allen registered his third double-double in four games with 17 points and 12 rebounds. He finished the weekend averaging 19.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game, with a 53.6 field-goal percentage.
Baseball - Pitcher
College of Idaho’s Austin Van Horne was named the Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Baseball Pitcher of the Week.
Van Horne, a six-foot right-handed pitcher from Caldwell, Idaho, made the most of his final appearance at Wolfe Field, tossing seven innings of four-hit ball, allowing just one earned run and striking out a career-high 12 (the most by a C of I pitcher since 2017). He added the walk-off two-run single in the ninth to help C of I to a 4-3 win. Van Horne tied C of I's career record for most overall games started (225).
Baseball - Player
Corban University’s Justin Tow was named the Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Baseball Player of the Week.
Tow, a six-foot-one senior infielder from Sweet Home, Ore., anchored the Warrior lineup, which exploded for 32 runs in its first series sweep of the season against Eastern Oregon University. He collected a pair of multi-hit games, driving in five runs over the weekend and collecting two clutch two-out RBI doubles for the squad in the series finale.
Softball - Pitcher
Top-ranked Southern Oregon University’s Gabby Sandoval was named the Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Softball Pitcher of the Week, her fifth honor of the year and third in a row.
Sandoval, a five-foot-three senior pitcher from Anaheim, Calif., held the team with the most runs in the NAIA (No. 23-ranked College of Idaho) to just one over 14 innings, pitching a two-hit shutout and a three-hit complete game. She improved to 20-0, making her the only pitcher in the country with at least 20 wins and no losses. Sandoval also moved up a spot to No. 4 on the NAIA's all-time wins list (110) and has now won 34-consecutive decisions.
Softball - Player
No. 1-ranked Southern Oregon University’s Hannah Shimek was named the Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Softball Player of the Week for the second time this year.
Shimek, a five-foot-10 senior infielder from Bothell, Wash., had nine hits and broke SOU's career record for RBIs with three – raising her total to 143 – to help the Raiders take over sole possession of first place in the CCC standings. She went 4-4 on stolen-base attempts, making her 21-22 this season and raised her batting average to .423 after boasting a .563 mark over the weekend.
Men’s Outdoor – Field Athlete
College of Idaho’s Stephen Campbell was named the Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.
Campbell, a junior from Apple Valley, Utah, recorded the No. 1 shot put mark in the CCC and broke C of I's school record (hitting the NAIA "A" mark) at the Sam Adams Classic in Spokane with a throw of 16.43. He now is No. 10 on the NAIA Top-Mark list this season.
Men’s Outdoor – Track Athlete
Lewis-Clark State College’s Clayton VanDyke was named the Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week.
VanDyke, a senior from Vernal, Utah, returned to the track after finishing the spring cross country season without missing a beat. He won the 800m by two seconds (1:52.61) and finished second behind a DI runner in the 1500m (3:54.48). Both times are ranked sixth on the NAIA performance lists.
Women’s Outdoor – Field Athlete
Warner Pacific University’s Brittany Coleman was named the Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week, her second outdoor weekly honor and third overall.
Coleman, a senior from Sutherlin, Ore., took first in the triple jump at the Wes Cook Invite with a mark of 11.94 meters, hitting the NAIA ‘A’ qualifying mark. She leads the CCC by nearly four feet and sits sixth nationally with her mark.
Women’s Outdoor – Track Athlete
Southern Oregon University’s Arianna Daniel was named the Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week.
Daniel, a senior from Elk Grove, Calif., ran the fastest 400-meter time in the NAIA this season, 55.62 seconds, in a win at the Lane Titan Invitational. The time also represented a personal record and is the second-fastest in Raider history. Daniel also pushed the Raiders to an 'A' standard time in the 4x100 at 47.67 (though their previous time of 46.98 still ranks No. 5 in the NAIA).
Women’s Golf - Golfer
Corban University’s Delainey Patterson was named the Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Women’s Golfer of the Week.
Patterson, a junior from Vancouver, Wash., took home medalist honors at the Bushnell University Spring Invite. She finished with a score of 77-79-156, winning the event by one stroke.
Men’s Golf - Golfer
Bushnell University’s Jon Holzgang was named the Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Men’s Golfer of the Week.
Holzgang, a senior from Tigard, Ore., shot a 220 to win the Bushnell Invitational, leading the Beacons to victory as they took over first place in CCC standings. Holzgang sat in eighth place after the second round, but rallied with a tournament-low 69 in round three to win by one stroke.
