College of Idaho Holds Lead After Day One of CCC Championships

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Day one of the 2021 Cascade Collegiate Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented by U.S. Bank wrapped up on Banner Bank Track Friday night. Through the first day of events, The College of Idaho leads both the men’s and women’s field with point totals of 122 and 171, respectively.
Overall, the first day of the Outdoor Championships had seven facility records fall and three CCC Championship meet records were broken. Of the records that fell, one stood for 25 years as a CCC record, and for 27 years as an EOU facility record in the 110-meter hurdles.
Another notable performance was by Allexander Kosel from EOU as he swept the jump events on day one winning both the long jump and the high jump. For day one points leader The College of Idaho, the Yotes had podium sweeps in the women’s 10,000-meter run and in the men’s shot put.
Running Events
In the first running event of the meet, the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, Larissa Mauer of C of I was the first champion on the track as she finished the race in a time of 11:07.93. She was followed by teammate Sage Martin in second with a time of 11:15.02. On the men’s side, it was Southern Oregon that went 1-2 in the steeplechase. Winning the race was Kevin VanDyke in a time of 9:18.67. He was followed by teammate Zeke Stelzer in a time of 9:23.86.
The women’s 4x100-meter relay saw Southern Oregon University break its own CCC meet record from three years ago as the Raiders posted a time of 46.56 seconds, which is also now a facility record at Banner Bank Track. In the men’s 4x100, it was EOU that took home the title with a winning time of 41.82 seconds. The time is also a new facility record.
In the second distance event of the day, the 1,500-meter run, Michelle Herbes of EOU was the women’s winner in a time of 4:42.27. In the men’s race, it was the footing of Clayton VanDyke of Lewis-Clark State College that brought home the CCC Title as he won in a time of 3:55.62.
In the 100-meter hurdles it was the speed of Kiersten Lancaster from C of I that won the race. She crossed the finish line in a time of 14.32 seconds and finished ahead of second place by over ½ second. In the men’s 110-meter high hurdles, Bryce Goggin of SOU set a new facility and CCC meet record with a time of 14.46 seconds.
In the final sprint event of day one, the 400-meter dash, a new facility record was set on the women’s side. Taking home the crown and setting the record was Arianna Daniel of SOU in a time of 55.39 seconds. In the men’s race, Angel Valdez of Oregon Tech took home the CCC crown with a time of 48.50 seconds in the one-lap race.
The final race of the day was the longest in the 10,000. C of I pulled off the podium sweep to help push its team point lead. Winning the race for the Yotes was Larissa Mauer in a time of 38:48.87. Placing second was Chaye Uptmor in 39:16.46, followed by Erin Moyer in third with a time of 40:04.99.
In the men’s 10,000 it was a pair of Lewis-Clark State College runners that went 1-2 in the race to wrap up day one. Winning the 25-lap race was Cole Olsen in a time of 30:58.04, which set a new facility and CCC meet record. Teammate Connor Turpin was second in the event with a time of 31:21.92.
Field Events
The day started with the throwing events as the hammer throw got the championship meet underway. Winning the women’s hammer throw was Catylynn Duff who set a new EOU facility record with a throw of 178-6. In the men’s hammer throw, taking home the CCC title was Bryan Terry of College of Idaho with a mark of 185-1.
In the long jump, it was a sweep for EOU who won both the men’s and women’s event. On the men’s side, Allexander Kosel took home the top spot with a leap of 23-3 ½. He was followed in second by teammate Bryce Peters with a mark of 22-9. In the women’s event, Ebony Wilson took home the CCC crown with a jump of 18-5 ¾.
In the women’s high jump, C of I once again picked up a 1-2 finish, this time by a pair of freshmen. Morgan Harrison was the event champion, clearing 5-3 ¼. Kenna Jones also cleared 5-3 ¼ but was second based on clearance attempts.
The second and final throwing event of the day was the shot put, which saw Maggie Ledbetter win the women’s event with a throw of 44-10 ¼. Her throw not only won her the event, but it is a new EOU facility record. In the men’s shot put, it was a 1-2-3 sweep for C of I as the Yotes took all three podium spots.
Winning the men’s shot put was Stephen Campbell with a throw of 52-8 ¼. He was followed by Bryan Terry in second with a mark of 51-2 ¼. Rounding out the sweep for the Yotes was Alec Kuzmack with a heave of 49-9 ¾.
The men’s high jump was the final field event of day one and saw EOU pick up a first and second place finish. Kosel was the event winner with a height of 6-4 to complete the day one sweep of the jumps. Teammate John Stuvland also cleared 6-4 but was tabbed the runner-up based on attempts.
