Two Second-Half Goals Lift Corban Women’s Soccer to 2-0 Triumph over Pacific

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Corban University women's soccer team began its 2021 fall campaign in impressive fashion, blanking NCAA Division III Pacific University (2-0) in a season-opening triumph on the road. A pair of second-half goals—scored within just five minutes of each other—paved the way for the Navy and Gold.

"Tonight was a great start to the year," said director of soccer Tim Kagey. "We had a lot of fun, and we really started to find our stride as the game went on."

Making the first start of her collegiate career, Malia Alonzo collected a clean sheet, aided by a suffocating defensive effort from the Navy and Gold. Corban surrendered just two shots in the match, one of which was on frame.

After a scoreless first half, Corban stormed out of the gates in the second period with a pair of quick goals. Maria-Frances Serrant got the scoring started, finishing off a beautiful through ball from Mei Suetsugu to put the Warriors on the board in the 46th minute.

Just five minutes later, Suetsugu doubled the advantage, blasting a missile into the top-right corner from 30 yards out.

That would be more than enough for Alonzo and the defense, as Corban preserved the shutout and cruised to the season-opening victory in Forest Grove.

Corban (1-0) will continue its non-conference schedule with another road match against an NCAA Division III opponent next week, facing off against crosstown rival Willamette University at Sparks Field on Wednesday, September 1.
