Puita, Wallot Lead Beacons to 2-1 Victory

EUGENE, Ore. – Emily Puita and Dejah Wallot both recorded a goal and an assist as the Bushnell University women’s soccer team defeated Pacific Union College 2-1 in Sunday afternoon’s non-conference contest at Civic Park.

“I’m excited about the victory” said Bushnell Head Coach Benny Flores. “I think the ladies came out and played well for us. We wanted to do the things that we had been practicing and the ladies executed today.”

Puita (pictured) got the Beacons on the scoreboard in just the second minute of play, collecting a pass from Wallot to record the first goal of the season.

The Pioneers tied the game in the 17th minute before Wallot sent in the match-winner in the 33rd. Fani Cossio found Puita in the middle of the box, who tapped a short-range pass to Wallot for the 2-1 advantage.

“I think our passing got better, especially in the second half as we calmed down,” said Puita, who posted her first collegiate goal in Sunday’s match. “We were able to make the runs through the back line and connect with each toward the end of the game.”

Bushnell (1-0) outshot Pacific Union (0-1) 22-8 on the match, finishing with a 9-0 corner kicks advantage. Anabel Mendez collected four saves for the Beacons, who picked up their first victory since September 27, 2019.

“We need to work on our finishing but other than that I was excited for the result, excited for the victory,” said Flores. “We hope this is a step in the right direction, not only for our team but for the program.”

The Beacons will look for win number two on Saturday, September 4 when they travel to Rocklin, California to take on William Jessup University at 11:00 am.
