Serrant’s Brace Helps Corban Women’s Soccer to 2-0 Win over Saint Martin’s

LACEY, Wash. – A brace from Maria-Frances Serrant and a second-consecutive shutout for Makida Herbert and the defense helped the Corban University women's soccer team complete an undefeated run through non-conference competition. The Navy and Gold moved to 4-0 on the season, defeating NCAA Division II Saint Martin's University on the road, 2-0.

It's the first time since 2010 that the squad has started a season 4-0.

Serrant's two goals push her season total to four, as she struck in both halves of Friday afternoon's match.

The star midfielder from Trinidad and Tobago struck in the 23rd minute, poking a grounder into the back of the net to give Corban another early lead.

Mei Suetsugu picked out Serrant with a well-placed cross, and Serrant fired off a shot that was initially deflected off a Saint defender. Her persistence paid off, however, as her next shot trickled past the outstretched arms of SMU goalkeeper Ali Campigotto.

In the 82nd minute, Serrant then added some valuable insurance, slotting in her second goal of the day to put the game on ice, marking the first brace of her Warrior career.

Meanwhile, the Corban back line held strong to earn the squad's second-consecutive shutout and third of the season. Herbert, the defending Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Defensive Player of the Week, grabbed a trio of saves in the clean sheet.

Regarding shot count, Saint Martin's actually out-shot the Navy and Gold on Friday. The two teams both fired off seven shots in the first half, while SMU nearly doubled the Warriors' tally in the latter period.

Though the result was encouraging, the Warriors feel as if they still have room to improve ahead of CCC competition.

"I don't think we deserved the result we got today," said director of soccer Tim Kagey. "We know what we need to fix before conference play."

Corban (4-0) will open up its CCC slate next weekend, traveling to Helena, Mont. to face Carroll College on September 19 at 4 p.m. MT.
