UBC takes Thunderbird Invitational, de Graaf wins in three-hole playoff

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The host Thunderbirds clinched their first tournament victory of the Cascade Collegiate Conference men's golf season by ten strokes to close out the 54 hole UBC Thunderbirds Invitational on Tuesday at Sudden Valley Golf Course in Bellingham, Washington.

UBC freshman John Paul Kahlert managed a 1-under 71 in the final round Tuesday to force a three-way playoff for the men's individual title with fellow Thunderbird Ethan de Graaf and Lewis-Clark State's Devon Caruso, all of whom finished an even par 216.

De Graaf clinched victory on the third playoff hole, with birdies on all three, edging out Caruso who went birdie-birdie-par to finish second. Kahlert was eliminated with a par on the first playoff hole.

UBC's Aidan Schumer posted a 1-under 71 Tuesday for a fourth place finish at 1-over 217 for the tournament while the low score in the final round came courtesy of LC State's Kristof Panke with a 3-under 69, rounding out the top five with a 2-over 218 through the two day event.

The Thunderbirds clinched their own tournament win with a 4-over par 868, 10 strokes up on Lewis-Clark State's 14-over 878.

Multnomah University had their best round of week with a combined 8-over par 296 on Tuesday, finishing in third place with a 50-over 914.
 


Bushnell University's 66-over 930 allowed the Beacons to finish in fourth, just three strokes ahead of fifth place Oregon Tech.

The College of Idaho maintained their sixth place position from Monday, finishing at 97-over.

Walla Walla University had their best round of the tournament on Tuesday, as did Corban, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively with totals of 105-over 969 and 110-over 974.

The T-Birds will be back south of the border on September 27th, along with the other seven competitors from this week, when they head to Lewiston, Idaho for the Warrior Invitational.
