KLAMATH FALLS, Ore.—Junior Jake Mitchell (Pictured) slotted home the season's first goal in the 21
st minute as Oregon Tech shutout William Jessup University 3-0 in the season opener for both teams Thursday at the OIT Soccer Field.
"Very proud of the boys performance today against a good Jessup team," said head coach
Casey Tate. "We were able to control the match and keep them from hitting us on the counter. Excited to see some guys get their first goals and assists. Big team effort and excited for the men to start off on the right foot. We have go back toe work and get up for another good team in Linfield this weekend."
The goal by Mitchell (Temecula, Calif.) came on a deflection by the Warriors' keeper off a John Sarna (So. – Corvallis, Ore.) shot from six feet out.
Tech held a huge advantage in possession in the first half and that showed with a 10-0 edge in shots.
Defensively, the Owls were fantastic in the first 45-minutes, as the Warriors were unable to get a shot off.
Ten minutes into the second stanza, Oregon Tech grabbed its second goal of the day to make it 2-0. Anthony Santillan (Jr. – Woodburn, Ore.) volleyed the ball to himself and placed a shot into the back of the goal.
A second yellow card issued to Jessup's Elias Orocio (Jr.-Brentwood, Calif.) in the 62nd minute put the Warriors at a disadvantage as they played a man down for the remaining 28 minutes.
It didn't take the Owls long to take advantage, as just six minutes after the card, Oregon Tech struck for their third goal as Arthur Proost (So.-Zoetermeer, Netherlands) scored off a great pass from Andrew Pasang (Fr.-New Zealand) in the 68
th minute.
Tech finished the game with a 17-2 advantage in shots and an 8-0 edge in shots on goal.
William Jessup keeper Robert Sams (5
thYr. - Elk Grove, Calif.) was a bright spot for the Warriors as he was credited with five saves on the day.
