DUPOINT, Wash. – With four players matching par or better, the Lewis-Clark State College Men’s Golf team enjoyed a strong final round at the Saint Martin’s Invitational at The Home Course on Saturday.
The Warriors shot a team score of 287 in the final round of the 54-hole tournament. Unfortunately, LC State, which entered the day in third place of the 12-team tournament, couldn’t gain ground on the top two teams and had to settle for third.
Western Washington again shot the best team score with a 278 to finish at 850, 12 shots ahead of Simon Fraser. LC State, just one of three non-NCAA Division II teams in the field, finished at 872.
“After a slow start, the guys rallied to get back and shot the best round of the year so far,” LC coach Brady Campbell said. “A third-place finish at a D-2 event lets everyone known that we can compete with anyone.”
Devon Caruso led the Warriors Saturday with a 1-under-par 71 Saturday, while Kristof Panke, Jorgen Lie Viken and Carlos Davila all matched par with 72s. The four combined for 12 birdies on the day.
“Four guys at even or better is a big deal and something we look forward to doing more often,” Campbell said. “We look forward to taking this momentum into our home event this week.”
Panke led the Warriors in the tournament with a 216 score, which tied him for 11th overall. Viken was a shot behind and tied for 13th at 217, while Caruso tied for 15th at 218. Davila finished at 221, while Jacob Waller recorded a 234.
The Warriors jump right back into action when the men’s and women’s teams play host to the Warrior Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the Lewiston Golf & Country Club. The invitational serves as one of three Cascade Collegiate Conference tournaments this season.
