RESULTS | LEWISTON, Idaho – Nationally ranked University of British Columbia and Oregon Tech continued their women’s golf duel as only five shots separate the two teams after the first day of the Warrior Invitational being played at the Lewiston Golf & Country Club.
UBC, ranked No. 8 in the NAIA Top 25 preseason poll, has the lead after the opening 18 holes with a 295, while Oregon Tech, ranked 19th, is at 300.
Individually, Oregon Tech’s Payton Canon shot the best round of the day with a 2-under-par 70 to lead UBC’s Emily Li by a stroke. The pair were the only players to shoot under par on the day. UBC’s Sonya Tang and Oregon Tech’s Ashley Zhu are tied for third at 73.
Canon birdied two holes on the front nine for a 34, but after consecutive bogeys on Nos. 12 and 13, she birdied the next two holes to go back to 2-under. Another bogey was followed by a birdie at 18 to finish the round.
Li had one birdie on the front and two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine.
Host Lewis-Clark State College sits third at 310 after rounds of 74 from Alexandra Schmidt and Deana Caruso. The 74 was a personal best for Caruso.
The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday with a scheduled 8 a.m. shotgun start.
The tournament is the second and final CCC tournament of the fall. The third tourney and conference championships will be in April.
