RESULTS | LEWISTON, Idaho – Senior Devon Caruso made a 3-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win the overall individual title and help Lewis-Clark State College tie the University of British Columbia for the top spot in the Warrior Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at the Lewiston Golf & Country Club.
Playing in the final group of the day, Caruso came to the par-5 518-yard 18th hole with a one-shot lead in the individual medalist race, but with his club trailing by one to UBC, which is ranked No. 15 in the NAIA Top 25 preseason poll. Caruso proceeded to hit his third shot tight on the hole, and, after everyone putted out, Caruso drained his putt. That gave him a 1-under-par 71 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament.
Caruso finished the two-day 54-hole tournament with a 5-under-par 207, which gave him a two-shot victory over Jason Swan of North Idaho College, which also was competing in the tournament as a non-CCC member. Caruso’s teammate, Kristof Panke, tied Multnomah’s Jacob Larson for third at 213. Panke fired a 68 on Tuesday, while Larson had a 69.
Both LC State, which was picked to finish fifth in the conference’s preseason poll, and UBC finished with 858 scores. LC State shot a 285 score on Tuesday while UBC, with all five of its players matching par or better, carded a 281. Ethan de Graaf, Dylan Macdonald and Michael Valk all shot 70s for UBC.
Oregon Tech wound up third among the conference teams with an 890 after carding a 293 on Tuesday.
Tuesday’s round was played in mostly cool conditions, and overnight rains softened the course and greens.
The tournament was the second and final CCC event of the fall. Two more CCC tournament are set for the spring, including the conference championships.
