Canon and Li Share Medalist Honors, UBC Wins Warrior Invitational

RESULTS | LEWISTON, Idaho – With four golfers shooting in the 70s, the University of British Columbia women’s golf team continued its strong fall performance by rolling to the title in the Warrior Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at the Lewiston Golf & Country Club.

The Thunderbirds, ranked eighth in the NAIA Top 25 preseason poll, carded a 297 on Tuesday for a 592 total and a 20-stroke victory. Oregon Tech, ranked No. 19 in the preseason poll, held off LC State for second. Oregon Tech had a 312 for a 612 total, while LC State has its best round of the fall with a 407 for a 617 score.

The individual title featured some drama between Oregon Tech’s Payton Canon and UBC’s Emily Li. Canon entered the day with a one shot lead.

Both players were at even par when they hit the 15th hole, but Canon proceeded to double bogey the next two holes to find herself at 4 over on the round. Li also ran into trouble with three consecutive bogeys before a par on the final hole for a 74.  Canon made a birdie putt on the 18th hole for a 75. That left both golfers with 145 totals and co-medalists in the two-day 36-hole event.

The best round of the day was by Una Chou of UBC, who fired a 1-under-par 71, two shots better than Lewis-Clark State’s Alexandra Schmidt, who carded a 73.

Tuesday’s round was played in mostly cool conditions, and overnight rains softened the course and greens.

The tournament was the second and final CCC event of the fall. Two more CCC tournament are set for the spring, including the conference championships.
