PENDLETON, Ore. – No. 20 Eastern Oregon University Men's Wrestling suffered its just its fourth dual loss of the season Wednesday evening, falling 38-17 to Corban University. The shorthanded Mountaineers did not field a full team, but still went the distance in the match.
Helping the Warriors (4-2, 4-2 CCC) pick up the win was forfeits from Eastern (7-4, 5-3 CCC) in three weight classes. The Warriors did surrender forfeits at two weight classes but in head-to-head bouts they finished the day winning four of the five five match-ups. For Corban, it is its first ever program win over EOU.
Adrian Guevara started the match with a forfeit win at 125 pounds to make it a 6-0 lead out the gate.
Zach Mauras then pushed the Mountaineers' lead to 11-0 with a 23-7 tech fall at 133 pounds. Mauras used nearly every second of the bout as he scored the tech fall in 6:55.
The win by Mauras was the last head-to-head victory for Eastern as Corban then won final four-match-ups. At 141 pounds,
Monte Zufelt was in control for the majority of the match but a late reversal in the third period led to him being pinned in 6:43. The fall got Corban within five, 11-6, and sparked a 20-0 run in head-to-head bouts.
Corban grabbed the lead at 12-11 after
Vincent Cramer was pinned in 6:10 at 149 pounds. EOU nearly snapped the run, but came up short as
Malakai Moyer dropped a close 7-5 decision at 157 pounds. The Warriors then picked up forfeits victories at 165 and 174 pounds to go ahead 27-11.
The final match-up of the dual came at 184 pounds. Wrestling for the first time in over two years,
Ryan Redford dropped a 19-4 tech fall in 6:04, which allowed the Warriors to go up 32-11. The final two weight classes both ended in forfeits. Corban got its final six points at 197 pounds, while EOU's six points came at 285 pounds with
Noel Orozco getting the win.
The Mountaineers will have some extended time off to get healthy before their next competition. EOU will be back in action Jan. 21-22 when the team competes at the Missouri Valley Invitational hosted by Missouri Valley College.
