CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Warner Pacific University men’s soccer team was named the Under Armour Team of the Week for Sept. 26 through Oct. 2, the Cascade Collegiate Conference announced Sunday.
The Knights, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Coaches’ Poll, went 2-0 on the weekend to take sole possession of the top spot in the
CCC standings. WPU extends its unbeaten streak to 11-0 and 6-0 in conference action and has outscored its opponents 41-to-3 so far this year.
On Friday, the Knights opened with a 3-0 victory over Bushnell University, with all three goals coming within a span of five minutes late in the second half. Hunter Leach got the ball rolling in the 82
nd minute before Kai Flugel capitalized just two minutes later. Andrew Martinez – who leads both the CCC and the NAIA with 18 goals on the year – capped the scoring with a goal in the 87
th minute.
The next day, WPU took on No. 19-ranked Corban University as both teams put their undefeated seasons on the line. The Knights came out on top with a 1-0 victory, pushing their shutout streak to over 360 minutes. Erik Mattice had the late heroics, converting a penalty kick in the 83
rd minute.
WPU continues conference action with a game Friday night as local foe Multnomah University challenges the Knights under the lights at 7 p.m.
