Broyles Nets Career-High in Test Against No. 2 Westmont

LEWISTON, Idaho – The Warrior women faced an early test with No. 2 Westmont (Calif.) to open the 2022-23 season. Hannah Broyles showed her improvement over the offseason with a career-high 21 points. No. 22 LC State outshot Westmont from the floor and made 50 percent of its shots, but the Westmont Warriors netted 10 3-pointers and controlled the boards to edge LC by a final of 81-73.
 
Maddie Holm got off to a hot start with the first seven LC State points to give the hosting Warriors a 7-4 lead two minutes in. Broyles added a 3 at 7:14 to make it a 10-4 advantage, but Westmont answered to take a 16-12 lead. WC quickly grew the margin to nine, 23-14, by 2:27, and back-to-back jumpers by Callie Stevens and Adyson Clabby had the score at 25-18 after the first 10 minutes.
 
A 3 by Broyles sparked a seven-point stretch for LC State to cut the deficit to five, 28-33, at 3:12 in the second quarter. Another triple by Broyles was followed by a bucket from Ellie Sander to send the Warriors into the locker room trailing 42-33.
 
LC State rallied to pull within five in the first three minutes of the third frame. Broyles, Holm and Clabby tallied three straight baskets to bring the score to 44-39, but Westmont gained momentum to surge ahead to a 58-44 lead by 1:09. Free throws by Lindsey Wilson and Payton Hymas made it a 62-48 heading into the final quarter.
 
Four points by Westmont opened the final frame to give the visiting Warriors a 66-48 advantage by 9:12, but LC rallied to pull within eight by 2:23. Holm, Stevens and Sander all scored in the span to make it a 73-65 deficit, and a pair of free throws by Stevens kept the margin at eight with two minutes to play. Broyles capped the scoring with a 3-pointer in the final 15 seconds to end the game with a final of 81-73 in favor of Westmont.
 
Broyles tallied a career-high 21 points to lead the hosting Warriors and went 5-for-10 from 3-point range. Holm added 15 points, Sander scored 11 and Stevens added 10. Muehlhausen led the defense with five rebounds and three blocked shots, and Clabby dealt seven assists.
 
LC State shot 50 percent from the floor (29-for-58) and snagged seven steals. Westmont capitalized on second-chance points with 19 offensive rebounds.

The Warriors host No. 25 Rocky Mountain (Mont.) next weekend in a pair of contests on Nov. 4 and 5. Tip off on Friday is set for 5 p.m.
