Kirkland, Wash. – The College of Idaho won its second-straight game to start the season with a 75-70 overtime win over William Jessup. This is the second-consecutive season that the Yotes have opened the season with back-to-back victories.
College of Idaho's (2-0) Lexi Mitchell recorded her 11
th career double double and first of the season, scoring 12 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. She was one of four Yotes in double figures as Jada Reed scored 16, Sienna Riggle added 15 and Taryn Riley provided 14. Mitchell and Riley Frith each had four assists in the win.
William Jessup (0-2) was led by a 21-point effort from Makalia Napoleon, who paced three Warriors in ddouble figures. Andrea Jovicevic and Natalie Moulos added 17 and 11 points, respectively.
Yotes head coach Janis Beal felt it was a great team win for her team. “We had a lot of different players step up at different times. It is an excellent learning opportunity early in the season to go to overtime and to come away with a win.”
The two teams traded baskets to tie the game at 64 and for the seventh time to begin the extra period before seven-straight points by the Yotes put College of Idaho ahead 73-66 when Reed knocked down a 3-pointer with just under a minute to go in the game. Reed sealed the win, making a pair of free throws with :05 left to play.
To get to overtime, College of Idaho defensively held William Jessup to 4 of 18 shooting in the final quarter and overcame an eight-point deficit, 57-49, with 5:40 left in regulation. After a Yotes timeout. C of I came back with an 11-3 run to regain the lead when Mitchell made a jumper with 2:08 left to play. William Jessup managed to tie the game at 60 and for the sixth time at 62 to force overtime.
Next, College of Idaho will host the Les Schwab Tire Center Tournament at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center. As part of the tournament, the Yotes will face UC Merced on Friday, Nov. 18 at 5 p.m. and Montana Tech on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 5 p.m.
