COSTA MESA, CALIF. -- The Oaks took to the mats for a double dual day vs Arizona Christian and Vanguard. The GSAC turned CCC foes duked it out, with the Oaks flexing their muscle with a pair of victories. Menlo now moves to 3-0 in dual meets for the season.
The Oaks opened things up with a 47-0 shilacking of the ACU Firestorm. Menlo won every weight class, headlined by an Isaiah Morales major decision over 25th ranked Kaden Martin. Other key victories in this one, included a major decision victory by Michael Torres over Terrill Kinlicheenie, ranked eighth in the CCC, a pin by Rysan Leong against Carlo Castagnaro, ranked fifth in the CCC, and a 2-1 victory by decision by Tony DaCosta vs Wyatt Nelson, also ranked eighth in the CCC.
The Vanguard matchup was a bit closer, but the Oaks remained on top with a 26-12 victory. The Oaks exacted revenge on the Lions, who stunned Menlo on senior night last season. Things got started with an upset victory by Cristian Vasquez, who downed 12th ranked Dominic De`altonaga by a score of 5-1. Vanguard would take the next two weight classes, but the Oaks would get back on track as Kasius Graham would pin Gabriel Cortez, ranked seventh in the CCC. The would give Menlo a 9-6 lead that they would not relinquish throughout the remainder of the dual. The biggest win of the dual, however, once again belonged to Isaiah Morales. The unranked freshman defeated Baron Gaunt, ranked thirteenth in the NAIA. Morales is making a strong case to be ranked in the next coaches polls.
The Oaks will be back in action next Sunday in the NAIA Challenge Duals in Lexington, Kentucky.
