SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Lewis-Clark State College Men’s and Women’s Golf teams each stand third after the opening day of the Ottawa University (Ariz.) Sterling Grove Shootout on Monday.
The Shootout, which is being played at the Sterling Grove Golf & Country Club, wraps up Tuesday with the final 18 holes of the 54-hole events. It’s the first tournament of the spring season for LC State.
Both LC State teams had solid first rounds but ran into trouble during the second 18 when the temperature dropped and the winds picked up.
“The wind was brutal today,” LC State coach Brady Campbell said. “There is no real way to prepare for the winds like we had other than actually being in it.”
The Warrior men fired a team score of 299 on the opening 18 to trail host Ottawa (Ariz.) by only two shots. However, in the second round, the Warriors shot a 325 and fell to third, 20 strokes behind the leader. Embry Riddle (Ariz.) is second at 621, three shots ahead of LC State’s 624. NCAA Division III Pomona-Pitzer is fourth at 634.
On the women’s side, LC State da 322 in the opening round, but a 353 over the final 18 for a 675 total. Embry Riddle (Ariz.) leads the field at 628, while Ottawa (Ariz.) is second at 642. It’s the first tournament this season the Warrior women have played 36 holes on opening day instead of the usual 18.
“Both teams got through the first round in decent shape and were able to piece together some rounds,” Campbell said. “Ultimately, the wind got us in the afternoon rounds and we couldn’t find a way to stop the bleeding. Tomorrow will be different and we look to finish strong.”
Carlos Davila leads the Warrior men as he is tied for sixth overall at 154 after rounds of 76 and 78. Jorgen Lie Viken matched 78s and is tied for 12th at 156, while Kristof Panke and Sondre Andresen are a shot back at 157.
Alexandra Schmidt continues her strong season by again leading the Warrior women with a 162, which has her tied for eighth. Deana Caruso and Kyla Currie are tied for 16th at 170.
