Mountaineers Take No. 12 Warriors to the Brink in Near First Round Upset

PARK CITY, Kan. – Mountaineer Women's Basketball saw its 2021-22 season come to a close Friday morning as they fell to No. 12 Sterling College, 73-67, in the round of 64. Eastern Oregon battled all 40 minutes in the near upset. The Mountaineers finish the season with a 22-11 overall record.

How it Happened
• Three-point shooting was key in the near upset for Eastern as the team shot 13-40 for 32.5%. They shot 41% overall going 25-61.
• Defensively, the Mounties held the Warriors (32-2) 0-10 from deep. Sterling shot 41.8% overall going 28-67 from the field. The Warriors scored 61 points in the paint and held EOU to just 26.
• In the first 10 minutes of play the two squads combined for 26 points. EOU had the edge with a 26-22 lead after the first.
• The Mountaineers shot a staggering 8-14 from deep to start the game. They went just 1-2 inside the arc in that same span.
• In the second quarter, both teams posted double-digit points. Sterling held the edge 16-13 in scoring, but EOU held the lead, 39-38, at the break.
• The Mountaineers shot 13-29 for 43.5% in the first half and went 10-23 from three-point range for 43.5%.
• Highlighting the first half for Eastern was Sailor Liefke who scored 21 points on 70% shooting (7-10). She was 5-8 from deep for 62.5%.
• In the third quarter, the Warriors held the Mounties to just 10 points and added 19 to lead 57-49 going into the fourth.
• After making 10 triples in the first half, the Mounties had just one in the third quarter. Sterling led by as much as nine points, 55-46, late in the frame.
• The Mounties made a comeback effort, scoring 18 points in the fourth, but the Warriors held on with the help of 16 points in the final frame.
• Early on, Sterling grabbed its largest lead of 12 points, 61-49, before EOU made things interesting. A 9-2 run got the EOU within three, 63-60, midway through the frame.
• The two teams traded points the rest of the way on a handful of two-point shots. EOU's final bucket was at the 1:12 mark as Sterling held on thanks to free throw shooting.

Mountaineers Stat Leaders
• Sailor Liefke led all scorers with 30 points on 11-19 shooting and was 6-14 from deep.
• Taylor Stricklin posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
• Adyson Harris chipped in 11 points and pulled down eight boards.
• Haley Robinett scored nine points on 4-11 shooting.

For the Warriors
• Taya Wilson led the way with 25 points on 9-16 shooting and was 7-8 at the free throw line.
• Bethany Stucky had a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
• Korynn Clason added 20 points in the win on 9-18 made shots.

By the Numbers
17 - The Warriors scored 17 points off 14 EOU turnovers.
2 - EOU was just barely out-rebounded by Sterling, 40-38.
