PLAINVIEW, Texas – The 2021-22 season came to a close for No. 19 Lewis-Clark State Women’s Basketball on Saturday with a 99-85 loss to eighth-ranked Wayland Baptist. The Warriors scored 39 points in the fourth quarter, but the comeback fell short in the 2022 NAIA Women’s Basketball National Championship Opening Round, presented by Ballogy. LC finishes the season with a record of 28-5.
Callie Stevens scored 22 points to lead LC in the contest and was voted to the all-tournament team.
“You have to give Wayland Baptist a ton of credit,” Head Coach Brian Orr said. “They had a good game plan to attack our matchup zone and they really shot the lights out. I am extremely proud of our team and the way we fought tonight, but I wasn't surprised because this group played hard every game. We are going to miss Heidi's (Sellmann) leadership next year. She has made a lasting impact on our program. This was a great experience for our team and I know they will continue to work hard this offseason. I can't wait for next year to start. It's going to be fun.”
The game was evenly played through the first 10 minutes. A jumper by Heidi Sellmann opened the scoring for LC in the first two minutes, and three straight baskets by Hannah Broyles, Maddie Holm and Stevens put the Warriors in front 9-8. LC State responded to a WBU 3 with back-to-back layups from Broyles and Adyson Clabby, but the Flying Queens took a 15-13 lead at the 2:36 mark and led the rest of the way.
LC pulled within six (27-21) with a 3-pointer from Ellie Sander in the early minutes of the second, but WBU surged ahead to take a 48-34 advantage into the break. The Warriors scored 12 in the third quarter and trailed 76-46 heading into the fourth frame.
The Warriors rallied for 39 points in the fourth quarter, with 13 points coming from Stevens. Sander grabbed six boards in the frame, but the deficit was too great to overcome.
Stevens led the Warriors with 22 points and four assists. She drained four 3-pointers and grabbed four rebounds. Holm added 15 points and six boards, Broyles tallied 13 points, and Sander notched her second straight double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Seven of her rebounds were offensive.
The Warriors finish the season with a conference title under their belts and graduate only one senior (Sellmann).
