CORVALLIS, Ore. –
The following 10 CCC student-athletes have been recognized as the WVT Laboratory Players of the Week for their performances during competition from March 7-13, 2022.
Softball – Pitcher
No. 6-ranked Southern Oregon University’s Katie Machado was named the WVT Laboratory Softball Pitcher of the Week.
Machado, a sophomore pitcher from Petaluma, Calif., threw two shutouts in a series sweep of University of Providence. She pitched 12 scoreless innings with 13 total strikeouts to improve to 8-2 on the year.
Softball – Player
No. 3-ranked College of Idaho’s Haley Loffer was named the WVT Laboratory Softball Player of the Week.
Loffer, a senior infielder from Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, hit .556 with five runs scored and six RBIs as the Coyotes completed a weekend sweep of Northwest University. She had three extra-base hits, finishing the week with a 1.111 slugging percentage. In the opener, she hit a home run and drove in five as C of I posted a 17-5 win. Loffer followed that up with a 2-for-3 effort with a run scored and two RBIs. Despite being held without a hit, she drew a pair of walks in the 8-1 win over Northwest on Saturday.
Baseball – Pitcher
No. 3-ranked Lewis-Clark State College’s Greg Blackman was named the WVT Laboratory Baseball Pitcher of the Week.
Blackman, a junior right-handed pitcher from La Grande, Ore., earned his fourth win of the season when he came out of the bullpen for 5.1 innings of work against College of Idaho on Friday. He struck out five and did not allow a run or walk a batter in his outing.
Baseball – Player
No. 3-ranked Lewis-Clark State College’s Justin Mazzone was named the WVT Laboratory Baseball Player of the Week.
Mazzone, a senior catcher from Huntington Beach, Calif., totaled 10 hits in 17 at bats (.588) in the four-game series, including a pair of four-hit games. He drove in three runs and scored four with one stolen base. Mazzone slugged .765 with two doubles and threw out one runner trying to steal.
Women’s Outdoor Track & Field – Track Athlete
Corban University’s Valerie Schmidt was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week.
Schmidt, a junior from Battle Ground, Wash., headlined the Warriors, showing no signs of rust after rehabbing the injury that cost her the late portion of the 2021 spring season. She clocked a time of 15.04 seconds (CCC qualifying mark) in the 100-meter hurdles to top of a field of 15. Schmidt also cleared a height of 5' 0.5" in the high jump.
Women’s Outdoor Track & Field – Field Athlete
The Evergreen State College’s Corona Parker was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.
Parker, a sophomore from Tualatin, Ore., set a school record with a clearance of 1.56m in the women's high jump en route to a first-place finish. She eclipsed the old school record of 1.50m and hit the CCC Championship qualifying mark in the process.
Men’s Outdoor Track & Field – Track Athlete
Bushnell University’s Linus Rueegger was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week.
Rueegger, a junior from Portland, Ore., took third place among over 1200 male runners (and 2,900 total runners) at the Shamrock'n Half Marathon in Sacramento, California. He finished first among all runners ages 19-24. His time sets a new Bushnell school record, qualifies with an "A" standard for the NAIA Marathon, and is currently the seventh-fastest time in the NAIA this season.
Men’s Outdoor Track & Field – Field Athlete
Southern Oregon University’s Matthew O’Henley was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.
O’Henley, a senior from San Luis Obispo, Calif., recorded the top hammer mark in the NAIA this weekend with a throw of 178-2, meeting the 'B' standard. He finished second overall out of 20 athletes.
Women’s Golf – Golfer
Oregon Tech’s Quincy Beyrouty was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Golfer of the Week.
Beyrouty, a sophomore from Salem, Ore., won the OIT Spring Invite to get the spring portion of the season going. After a 79 the first day, she posted a 67 in the second round, setting a school-record five-under. She had a career day on Monday, totaling seven birdies including six in a stretch of just nine holes. The impressive day saw Beyrouty move from fifth to first, eventually clinching a share of the individual title. It is not only Beyrouty's first individual title for the Owls but also her career-low and helped OIT win the event.
Men’s Golf – Golfer
Oregon Tech’s Michael Gray was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Golfer of the Week.
Gray, a junior from Corvallis, Ore., won the OIT Spring Invite out of 20 total golfers. He posted a first-round score of 73 and followed with a 72 to help the Owls win the invite. Gray birdied three times in the final six holes to overcome his bogeys on Monday. After sitting tied for first with a 145, Gray won the one-hole playoff to secure the individual title.
