CORVALLIS, Ore. –
The following 10 CCC student-athletes have been recognized as the WVT Laboratory Players of the Week for their performances during competition from April 4-10, 2022.
Softball – Pitcher
No. 9-ranked Southern Oregon University’s Cayla Williams was named the WVT Laboratory Softball Pitcher of the Week for the first time this year after picking up a player of the week honor earlier this year.
Williams, a pitcher/first baseman from San Jose, Calif., pitched a one-hit shutout against Warner Pacific University on Friday and a two-hit shutout on Saturday, both in five innings, to improve to 10-2. She picked up a save in SOU's 2-1 win Wednesday over No. 2 Oregon Tech, her fourth of the season, and finished the week with 10 strikeouts and four earned runs. Offensively, Williams batted .467 with eight RBIs and five runs scored.
Softball – Player
No. 9-ranked Southern Oregon University’s Riley Donovan was named the WVT Laboratory Softball Player of the Week for the second time this year.
Donovan, a senior catcher from Half Moon Bay, Calif., shot to No. 1 in the NAIA in both home runs (12) and RBIs (63) over the weekend. She tied SOU's single-season home run record on Friday against Warner Pacific University and on that same day, registered 10 RBIs – becoming the first Raider ever to do so in a single CCC doubleheader. Donovan went 9-for-12 (.625) in the series with 13 RBIs, eight runs scored and four extra-base hits (1.125 slugging percentage).
Baseball – Pitcher
No. 4-ranked Lewis-Clark State College’s Trent Sellers was named the WVT Laboratory Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the third time this year.
Sellers, a junior right-handed pitcher from Kennewick, Wash., put together another masterful start and has not allowed a run in his last 17 innings. He fanned 10 and did not walk a batter in eight innings to earn the win against Eastern Oregon University. He has 24 strikeouts and no walks in his last two starts. Sellers is fifth in the NAIA in ERA at 1.09 and has nine wins on the season.
Baseball – Player
No. 4-ranked Lewis-Clark State College’s Justin Mazzone was named the WVT Laboratory Baseball Player of the Week for the second time this year.
Mazzone, a senior catcher from Huntington Beach, Calif., helped the Warriors to three victories at Eastern Oregon by going 7-for16 (.438) with seven RBIs. He launched two home runs and legged out two doubles for a .938 slugging percentage. Mazzone also scored five runs in the series.
Women’s Outdoor Track & Field – Track Athlete
College of Idaho’s Sage Martin was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this year.
Martin, a sophomore from Meridian, Idaho, won the 3K steeplechase with a time of 11 minutes, 4.46 seconds at the 2022 Aggie Invitational. With the time, Martin secured an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship.
Women’s Outdoor Track & Field – Field Athlete
College of Idaho’s Catylynn Duff was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week, her first of the outdoor season.
Duff, a senior from Culver, Ore., recorded a throw of 182-8 (55.67 meters) to finish fourth in the hammer throw, eclipsing her own school record of 181-4 (55.29m). The throw is 13 inches further than anyone to date in the NAIA and an improvement of nearly nine feet on her season best.
Men’s Outdoor Track & Field – Track Athlete
College of Idaho’s Lane Maher was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week.
Maher, a sophomore from Pendleton, Ore., took second in the 110-meter hurdles with an NAIA "A" qualifying time and broke his own school record with a time of 14.30 seconds (converted to 14.34 due to wind). His time is the seventh-fastest to date in the NAIA. His second place finishes were in races with a field full of NCAA Division 1 competition.
Men’s Outdoor Track & Field – Field Athlete
Oregon Tech’s Jose Ignacio was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.
Ignacio, a junior from Wilsonville, Ore., became the fourth NAIA athlete to break the 200-foot mark in the javelin. He won the event at the Titan Invitational out of 12 athletes with a mark of 61.25 meters.
Women’s Golf – Golfer
No. 3-ranked UBC’s Grace Bell was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Golfer of the Week.
Bell, a freshman from Calgary, Alta., Canada, led the Thunderbirds to their eighth-straight tournament victory at the Pacific Invite. She finished even-par to win her second individual title of her career, carding a 71.
Men’s Golf – Golfer
No. 6-ranked UBC’s Michael Valk was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Golfer of the Week.
Valk, a junior from Medicine Hat, Alta., Canada, tied for fifth at the Pacific Invite against tough NCAA competition. He helped the Thunderbirds take second out of 13 teams and finished with a 76 in the first round and a 73 in the second to tally a 149 total score.
