CORVALLIS, Ore. –
The following 10 CCC student-athletes have been recognized as the WVT Laboratory Players of the Week for their performances during competition from April 25 through May 1, 2022.
Softball – Pitcher
No. 3-ranked Oregon Tech’s Sarah Abramson was named the WVT Laboratory Softball Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time this season.
Abramson, a senior pitcher from Milwaukie, Ore., helped the Owls clinch the CCC title with a pair of shutout wins. She fanned 10 in a 1-0 victory in Game 1 and added a three-hitter in an 8-0 win in Game 3. They were her ninth and 10
th shutouts of the year as she moved past 200 strikeouts in a season for the third time in her career.
Softball – Player
No. 10-ranked Southern Oregon University’s Riley Donovan was named the WVT Laboratory Softball Player of the Week for the third time this season.
Donovan, a senior catcher from Half Moon Bay, Calif., went 6-for-9 with seven walks and nine RBIs on the weekend. She broke SOU's single-season RBI record, bringing her NAIA-leading total to 83 and hit her 17
th home run of the year in the sweep.
Baseball – Pitcher
Corban University’s Zack Simon was named the WVT Laboratory Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the second time this year.
Simon, a junior right-handed pitcher from Las Vegas, had a solid outing against Eastern Oregon University. In 7.2 innings, he broke the Warrior record with 14 strikeouts and scattered eight hits, allowing just two earned runs.
Baseball – Player
No. 5-ranked Lewis-Clark State College’s Riley Way was named the WVT Laboratory Baseball Player of the Week for the second time this year.
Way, a senior infielder from Lewiston, Idaho, was nearly unstoppable at the plate for the Warriors over the weekend. The Lewiston native was a perfect 4-for-4 on Saturday, then went 3-for-4 and 1-for-2 in Sunday's doubleheader to hit .800 on the weekend. Way slugged a home run and two doubles for a 1.300 slugging percentage and .833 on-base percentage. He did not strike out in his 12 plate appearances, knocked in four runs and scored six times.
Women’s Outdoor Track & Field – Track Athlete
UBC’s Katherine Lucas was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week.
Lucas, a senior from Vancouver, B.C., Canada, set two NAIA “A” marks and a “B” mark within a matter of hours at the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational. She took first in the 100-meter (11.95 seconds) and 200-meter (24.56 seconds) events and took second in the 400-meter race in 56.51 seconds. She currently leads the CCC in all three events.
Women’s Outdoor Track & Field – Field Athlete
Southern Oregon University’s KiAshe Hobby was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.
Hobby, a junior from Sacramento, Calif., recorded her first 'A' NAIA mark of the season in the hammer, going to No. 10 on the NAIA list and No. 2 in the Cascade Conference with a mark of 168-11 to place 5
th at the OSU High Performance Meet. She also competed in the discus (39.21 meters) and shot put (12.21 meters).
Men’s Outdoor Track & Field – Track Athlete
Corban University’s Robert Swoboda was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week.
Swoboda, a senior from Ukiah, Calif., had a school-record performance in the 10,000 meters as he crossed the finish line at the 29:32.69 mark (NAIA 'A' standard) behind only an NCAA Division I runner from University of Portland. Swoboda's time is the No. 1 mark across the NAIA, currently.
Men’s Outdoor Track & Field – Field Athlete
UBC’s Cameron Kuziak was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.
Kuziak, a freshman from Calgary, Alta., Canada, won the javelin at the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational with a mark of 58.21 meters. It gave him an NAIA “A” standard as he beat out 10 other athletes.
Women’s Golf – Golfer
No. 3-ranked UBC’s Elizabeth Labbe was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Golfer of the Week for the second time this year.
Labbe, a freshman from Quebec City, Que., Canada, won the individual conference title by a single stroke over her teammate, Sonja Tang. Labbe's second round 68 was the lowest 18-hole score of any competitor as she helped the Thunderbirds to the Conference banner and a 10
th consecutive tournament win this season
Men’s Golf – Golfer
Bushnell University’s Andrew Webb was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Golfer of the Week.
Webb, a senior from Surprise, Ariz., secured CCC Championship Individual Medalist honors, winning a hole-by-hole playoff over UBC's Russell Howlett on the third hole. It was a big comeback win for Webb, who struggled in the second round on Monday and had fallen into a fifth-place tie after sharing the first-round lead. He also struggled early on in Tuesday's third round, bogeying three consecutive holes to sit at two-over after six holes. He rallied to claim birdies on five of his next seven holes and ended the day at two-under. Webb was the only golfer to have two sub-par rounds in the tournament and he qualified to compete in the NAIA National Championship after winning his first career medal in four seasons.
