SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Baylee Touey's credentials as an NAIA All-American sprinter were on display for the Southern Oregon University women's soccer team Saturday afternoon against The Master's (Calif.).
Touey, the junior forward from Grants Pass, scored the lone goal as the Raiders broke into the win column with a 1-0 defeat of the Mustangs at Reese Field.
In the 18th minute, defender Jordan Bell cleared from SOU's back line to Touey, triggering a one-woman counter-attack. Touey collected the ball and brought it 65 yards up the sideline, leaving several Mustangs in her tracks, until aligning herself with the right post for a 12-yard strike that bounced just inside the left one.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ashlynn Hernandez earned the shutout with three saves, but SOU (1-1-0) kept the Mustangs without a shot on goal for the final 52 minutes. Possession favored the Raiders, who had eight shots to TMU's five, and the Mustangs' last chance – a good look for Katie Merical inside the box with a minute left – sailed high over the goal.
The win was the Raiders' first over The Master's – which was picked to finish fourth in the Golden State Athletic Conference – in seven head-to-head matchups. They'd been held scoreless over their three most recent outings against the Mustangs since 2018.
The Mustangs dropped to 0-1-0.
Touey, a two-time member of the All-Cascade Conference soccer team and three-time All-American as an anchor for SOU's track relay teams, is up to 13 career goals.
The Raiders, who opened with a 1-0 loss at No. 8 Westmont (Calif.) on Thursday, complete their road trip Monday with a visit to another GPAC squad, Hope International (Calif.). Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
